betta's are treated the same way... though they don't get as big as gold fish can, they still need a filter! AND a heater!
NO BOWLS for ANY fish!!! Thanks for this post!

When i was five, I got four in a 1/2 gallon acrylic tank that was shaped like a TV as a giveaway at a store grand opening. A a larger gold, a larger gray, and two smaller golds. They were named Gold, Silver, Splish, and Splash. I had them for about 9 months till the last one died. And I still remember and feel sorry for them to this day.
At a store where I once worked, they wanted to do a special of buy a 2.5 gallon tank setup and get two free goldfish. I don't think they liked what I told them they should do about the promo. ;) For some reason, I didn't last very long there.

A while ago I helped with a fund raising carnival at my wife's church. We are not the same religion. She goes to my church far more often than hers, but will participate in these sort of events.
They wanted to put goldfish in 1 qt (if that) ivy bowls that you can get in the craft store for about $1 each.
I was able to convince them otherwise. I found a source for four dozen 1.75 qt "Kritter Keepers" for $1.50 each. I personally donated the $25 difference in costs. While hardly the proper home, it was marginally better. I set each fish up with a little tank and a handful of gravel. I printed up a care sheet that stressed "respect for all life" and that this container was only a temporary home for the fish and that it really belonged in a proper aquarium with filtration.
This got a few "holy rollers" all worked up ("they are just stupid fish" they said) and I had to get the pastor involved. The Sunday before the event, I know in the pastor's sermon, he spoke of respect for all of God's creatures, even the "lowly" goldfish. He personally handed them out and told the children to only accept them if they were willing to accept the responsibility of caring for the fish properly. Some actually declined the prize. I believe a few may have actually survived.

What about siamese fighting fish the stores sell them to people and tell them to buy these little bowls that are as small as a coffee cup, what do you think of that~
I personally own a 100 gallon aquarium with 20 happy aggressive fish who eat goldfish everyday!

i had gold fish for years and i always put them in bowls, i mean really big ones.and they all lived very long happy lives. they don't need filters they need regular water changes and daily water movement but not filters thats silly. you need enough room for it to be comfortable but thats it. don't be silly
