I have a ten gallon fish tank, and the decorations that we had put in there are turing orange. I have live plants, fake plants, a large crystal with the matrix still attached, and a small broken "Roman" style column. Almost all of the crystal and the column are covered with this orange stuff. What is it?

It's called brown algae, but it's technically not algae. It's diatoms. Most algae eaters won't eat it. I bought some otos to take advantage of it in my tank and they had the glass cleared in two days flat. It really is pretty soft and easy to remove with your hands though, or a soft, clean brush. Most snails will also munch on it.

But the truth is, it will go away on its own once it has finished off its supply of silicates, which are trace leftovers from when the tank was put together. About that time, you'll probably start seeing some green algae! ;)

if it is a newer tank (under 2 years) it is most likely diatoms. you can clean them off with a new toothbrush, or aqaruim sponge, or a clean cloth. An algea eating fish is probably not the best idea in a 10 gal tank, as most algea eaters grow to be quite large, and would outgrow the tank in time. You could get some larger snails such as an apple snail, mystery snail or ramshorn snail, ghost shrimp will also help clean the tank, but your best bet is to manually clean it off, that is the only way to garantee a thorough cleaning.

That's algae. Take out the plants and decorations and scrub them under running water with a toothbrush that you use only for this. (Otherwise, ick!) Do *not* use any kind of soap. It can hurt your fish. The algae will come off easily under running water.

in my opinion i admire organic colour gravel yet with all of those extraordinary colorings i might bypass with black gravel because of the fact it's going to make each and every thing else stand out somewhat greater, which incorporate your betta
