i want at least two species, with one swimming in the mid-upper areas and one bottom dwelling.

please list a few species so i can look into them as well.
i'm hoping to get fishes that are pretty hardy but active (not just idling the whole time)

How about:

4 fishes, pick: Guppy, Platy, Danio, Neon/ Cardinal Tetra or other small tetras for the mid upper areas and, a couple of Cory Cats for the bottom swimmer?

Sorry but a 6 gallon is too small for what you want. Fish labeled as "active" need room to be active. To keep a school of mid dwellers and a pleco or algae eater or a school of catfish, a 15 or 20 gallon really doesn't cost that much more.

If you're willing to forego a bottom dweller, you could fit 4-6 guppies in a 6 gallon. They're slow swimmers with their long fins but they stay busy. A single betta is hardy and showy, and when bettas are healthy and happy in filtered tanks with room to swim, rather than cramped in cold, tiny bowls, they're fairly active. I love watching mine.

no, you cant get any bottom dwellers in a 6 gallon, smallest is a gold algae eater at 5.5 inches. You could go with danios. No kuhli loaches, they get like 3-4 inches.
