If you want to keep a really nice betta and have him to be healthy and happy you need to go get a 1.5 - 5 gallon tank with a filter and heater. Pick your favorite decor, whatever you like. If all you want to do is have a prety fish, just pick one out at a small local pet shop (I'm not a fan of the big "super" type pet stores for buying live animals). If you want a truely esceptional fish or if you plan on breeding them would save buy from an IBC (International Betta Congress) member breeder. There are many online, just search for them. You may even have one local to you.

Bettas do well eating betta pellets and enjoy some frozen blood worms as a treat a few times a week.

For maintanance, just change out 25% of the water and clean out the gravel with a gravel vac once a week and your set.

Buy from a pet store that is NOT a chain if you can, the healthiest fish will generally come from private owned pet stores. Look at the fish carefully to make sure he is swimming well and has no broken or torn fins. Also, make sure the fish has nothing growing on him, like white spots. Then buy a water conditioner for a beta and floating beta food. Ask the pet store to help you learn the basics on acclimating your fish.
We had a beta that lived 2 1/2 years. He lived in various clear glass vases. Sometimes we added stones, but usually this just made changing the water more difficult. I recommend a nice clear glass vase or bowl, something tall enough that the fish can't jump out of... they will jump! Usually keep the water 3-5 inches from the top of the vase/ container. This will keep the fish safely in the water. Good luck!

For abetta fish as they are tropical fish, you will need:
1. a tank at least ten gallons
2. a package of gravel or if you would like to keed a cleaner tank and the parasites at bay, none.
3 a heater set to 78-80 degrees.
4. Water conditioner to dechlorinate the water
5. A filter for your tank.
6. Fish food, or betta food, live foods for a supplement.
7. Some plants live or silk but not plastic because plastic plants can rip up your betta's fins.
8. and a betta- you can find these at almost any pet store. They can be found usually in those tiny torture chambers near the fish section or the counter. You can also get them at petco, petsmart, or walmart. But I wouldn't suggest it.

I have two betas. I went to a few different stores and the ones at Petsmart looked healthier. So that's where I bought mine and their doing great so that's where I would go. I prefer if u r getting more than 1, to buy different tanks the dividers don't work so well. I bought mine 4 a science fair project and tested 3 different foods 2 c which they prefer and they chose tropical fish food and that's what I feed them now. My 1st fish I fed beta food and it died. My example of fish food is TetraMin's tropical crisps. Oh, and before u buy the fish it helps if u do some research on them. I hope my answer helps.

Petco. They are usually good about maintaining their fish. Went to a petco this weekend and they had a lot of sick fish, when Petco has sick fish they tell you they are under observation but not petsmart. Make sure you look at them closely, do they have any white spots, are they swimming around. Betta do not need big tanks or a lot of accessories. A couple of rocks, maybe a plant, and clean water. They are low maintenance.

Any fish store will have bettas. Make sure you get at least a 1 gallon tank with a filter (2.5 gallon would be much better). Regular gravel will do fine for the substrate. As for plants/decorations, don't buy anything that is rigid or hard or has rough or sharp edges. They will rip your bettas fins apart as he swims around it. Make sure all decorations are very soft and flexible.

I've purchased nearly all of my fish and fish tank provides at petco/petsmart and have not had too many court cases. My greatest criticism is that my filtration approach stored going out. I had person who hung excessive and needed to exchange it two times. Otherwise I used to be lovely completely satisfied with the whole lot I received they usually do have earnings. If you signal up for a petco card they're going to deliver you a ten% off coupon proper off the bat to your subsequent acquire.
