I purchased a Betta yesterday; it's my first. I have a one gallon bowl, live plants, made a nice little home for him. He shows no sign of any illness or disease, is active and already follows my finger across the bowl and comes out of his hideyhole when I come near. However, as he is my first I have a question and mild concern. In all pictures I've seen of Bettas, they have a gorgeously spread open tail fin. His stays fairly tight together, even when swimming, he doesn't spread it out much and let it flow. Is that normal or might there be something wrong? All of his fins are kindof like that except one which is broken (one of the two tiny ones that stream down beneath his head). They're not clamped real tight, but he never spreads them out much either.

Oh, and secondary question -- is it better to use filtered (at home with a Brita filter) water for him or start with tap and condition it?

I've had my male betta for nearly a year and I recently noticed some weird discoloration between his bottom fin and tail fin. It looks like a white fuzziness which makes me think it's columnaris, however he doesn't have it anywhere else on his body. He's also still active and still eating well. Can anyone help?

Even though I frequently change my freshwater fishtank's filter once a month, the water never gets back to that crystal clear clairity it was when I first added the water- It seems to have a permanant haze-Any advice? HOW do i keep the water crystal clear? The filter must not be enough- how often should I change the water and wash/replace the gravel?

I just went out to my mailbox and on the way in, found three (in no more than 5 minutes). I have found more than 150 in my lifetime (20 years old) and am just wondering if anyone else has or hasn't found any.

Our danio cant seem to swim at the correct angle (its head up tail down) and if it stops swimming it turns up side down, theres a large open sore on its side that looks like its side has exploded. The fish was fine last night and its 1 of the biggest in the tank. Is this dropsey? and is it curable or should i just end its misery.

When I got up this morning one of my yellowtail damsels was a very muted color. after a while he went back to normal, but after he did it seemed like just about every fish in the tank took their own turn at being a dull color. What causes this. I am using the damsels to cycle the tank and stableize it. They have only been in there since late on monday and i've been keeping a close eye on the ph, nitrates and such and everything is as normal as it should be for this stage.

I know there have been stories of goldfish living for 10-20 years but what is the average maximum age a goldfish can live for. It is just that I have two goldfish which I have had for about 6 years now, and it looks like there is no sign of them dying yet.
