It really depends on what cichlids you keep. It seems over and over people ask about cichlids as if they were just one type of fish, yet they comprise such an incredible variety that one can be opposite in every way from another.

The truth is though, if it's long and slithery it probably won't have much protection against most cichlids. For bottom dwelling tankmates the better option are better protected catfish - the variety depending on what type of cichlids you are keeping.

For low to mid aggression New World cichlids of small to mid size, the Raphael cat is a good example of what can work.

For low to mid aggression Rift Lake cichlids, Syno. Multipuncatus (cuckoo catfish) is a good example of what can work.

Most types of pleco work well with cichlids of most types except the fiercest, thanks to their thick hide. For rift lake species the Bristlenose tends to work quite well.

*edit: With that mix you can try anything tough really - as it is the tank is a gamble, and I imagine you will have plenty of problems ahead of you as the fish mature. For now I'd recommend just leaving it and not adding more. Instead you might consider heading over to www.cichlid-forum.com to learn about cichlids and how to stock and care for them properly.

you have quite a mix in there and quite frankly I think it sounds fully stocked!

the african cichlids you have may not get along with fish such as the silver dollar or the gourami in the long-term. african cichlids should pretty much be kept with other african cichlids and thats it.

plecs and some other african fish can work, but i have seen plecs get bullied to the point of exhaustion in tanks.
