Danio's are active, fast, schooling fish, and once grown, not big, but not tiny either. In the end any tank less then 20 gallons is a poor home for them - you can get them to survive the 5 gallon, or maybe even the 2 gallon, but it's still a lousy home for them.

And those inches per gallon rule is full of holes. It doesn't take into account a fishes minimum tank size, activity level, territorial needs, physical bulk, species cleanliness... It's a basic formula for those who don't really want to learn about the fish they keep.

None. The fish are active swimmers. They need at least 24" or better yet 30" of room to swim back and forth. A 20 high is 24" wide, a 20 long is 30" wide. This is the minimum size for these fish. They grow to about 1.5" so around a dozen would be nice, or six danios and six other small fish. No less than 6, they need to school.

Zebra danios are schooling fish and need to be in groups of at least six or more. You could probably make five quite comfortable in a five gallon tank but I don't think I'd recommend it. I definitely think two gallon is out of the question for these fish.

P.S. I have a 55 gallon tank and, since it's still cycling, my eight danios are quite enjoying having the tank to themselves.

Its usaully one inch per gallon but for a two gallon you could probaly put in three and for the five gallon 6. If you have a smaller tank the danios won't grow very big because there is not enough room to grow 3 inches. I have 10 danios in my 75 gallon tank and they are great!

The rule of thumb is one inch per gallon. Zebra danios are pretty small fish between 1.5-2 inches. So one for a 2 gallon, and two or three for a five gallon.

A good rule-of-thumb is one-inch of fish per gallon. Zebra's are about 1 inch, so you can safely put 5 in the 5 gallon tank. Don't put more!
