Before you do, try a little experiment. Put a piece of the dog food in a glass of water about the same temperature as your tank water and let it sit about 15 minutes. You'll probably notice your glass has an oily film on the water's surface. Dog food has a higher fat content (for energy) than what fish need. The oily film will interfere with the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide at the water's surface, so you could be interfering with the amount of oxygen in the water for your fish to breathe. Think about that.

your fish is a living thing i suggest you do not do any experiments with it. buy the food that FISH eat and don't try to save money at the risk of killing a living thing.
