Well, it seems a dirty tank means something completely different to you then me, judging by your cooked algae.

I encourage algae growth on the rocks, wood, and other decorations - it makes the tank look natural, it makes all of the decoration look like it really belongs, and algae only benefits the tank in the long run.

My 'cleaning' consists of weekly water changes and vacuuming of the substrate, scrubbing of algae off the glass, and the monthy cleaning of mechanical waste from the filters along with replacement of the fine foam media.

With this routine the tank keeps clean continuously, with never the need to actually take down and clean the tank, or remove the fish.

I add water when needed. Do water changes and suck the dirt off the bottom about once every 2 months (I have found doing it more can cause fish to die) and once a yr I take the tanks totally down, scrub and clean everything and start over. I only rinse the dirt out of the stones and do not sterilize them so I can keep the good bacteria alive and well. Dont worry about algae. Think of it as snack food for your tank. If you have an over growth you are OVERFEEDING your fish

I never take mine completely apart. I use a gravel cleaning siphon from the pet store to remove about 25% of the water once a week. I also replace the filter materials once every 2 weeks and wash of algae from rocks and such as needed. This keeps a tank clean and healthy without killing off the beneficial bacteria every tank needs.

I enjoy cleaning it. It relaxes me. Then again, I love to see my little Bettas happy.
