Fish - February 2007

I just bought two snails from the pet shop. The pet shop guy said that it was ok to put them in a tank with a betta fish, so thats where I got them at right now. They seem to be doing ok, I was just wanting to know a little more about them. Are there any dangers that I should know about. Please tell me if there are any important things that I should know about keeping two snails with a betta fish. Thanks

I am now upgrading to a 55 gal tank. The set up I found has been in a basement for 2 years. The tank is not that bad but the filters are and tubes have what looks like old alge on them. I was told everything was rinsed when it was taken down. The filters are a whisper power filter that takes 2 filter pads and a fluval 303. How can I safely clean them? Also I need to set this up asap.
Thanks for your help.

I have two female bettas in one tank already (just them, no other fish) and they get along swimmingly ;). However, when I bought another female they harrassed her until she died. Is there a way to acclimate a new female to the two I already have so that they won't kill her or shall I just stick with the two I have?

I have ordered live plants from a company called Ottawa Aquatics. I ordered them 2 weeks ago, and have not received them yet. I was just wondering if anyone else here have ordered live plants from this company and what their experience with them was like? Also, I was wondering if you could give me some names of companies online that ship live plants in or to Canada? The local pet store doesn't have much selection here that is why I'm ordering online. Thank you in advance.

Here's the problem..... I got my husband a very cool betta tank for his birthday. It's a hanging globe with a little light inside. From what I understand Betta's like small spaces and are happy in simple surroundings. The globe is not very big... the size of a small fish bowl, and we put marbles in the bottom and a single little fake plant. Our first one died because the salesgirl at petsmart told us simple tapwater was fine. She forgot about the chlorine problem. So, I got the dechlorinator drops and a new betta. I put him in spring water. The food bottle said 4 little nuggets in the a.m. and 4 in the p.m. We followed that plan. After 6 days he was dead. Is it because the food floated down to the marbles and he didn't eat it? Did the food contaminate the water since there were a few nuggets in the bottom? My husband says we need a filter for the little bowl because we keep killing fishes. I think he's full of poo. After all petsmart has them in filthy little cups and ..

I have a male guppy, and he is really fat. At first I thought the fish was a pregnant female, but I did my research, and he is definitely a male. I'm not overfeeding them as far as I know, but now I noticed that he has white stringy poop coming out of him. I read this might be an intestinal bacterial infection? He's still eating, which I guess is a good sign. But he can barely swim around because of how big he is. Any advice?

i bought 8 neon tetra's yesterday aswell as a catfish and two black neon tetra's. they all seemed to get along fine. i woke up this morning to find only 7 neon tetra's. one has totally disappeared! its not in any of the hiding places and is not floating at the top. is it possible the other fish could have eaten it overnight?

I was given a 200 gallon aquarium recently and we've finally decided to set it up. can anyone link me to a website or tell me the best filteration equipment to use? i'm not a beginner at keeping fish, i've just never had such a large tank and i want to set it up right. my kids are stuck on goldfish ( i know they are a dirtier fish to keep, but apparently that's what we're gonna go with). thanks in advance.

I have a albino catfish in a i think it's about 30 litre tank. The other catfish in with it are it's mate, one bristlenose, one julii, one emerald and two upside-downs. Some of my albino catfish's tail is missing. Will it grow back? Will it be ok? I used to feed my fish every day but that was making the water murky so i have cut it back to once every couple of days. I do a water change every fortnight and check acidity as well. When i feed them i give two tropical tablets and one algae chip for the bristlenose. Also the albino with the damaged tail is female. She lays eggs. Thanks in advance for your replies.

In the last week both of my frogs and 3 fish have died, what going on?

I've had a small black moor goldfish for a month now though over this time it has become less and less active- and spends more time floating at the top of the tank, with trouble swimming downwards. After research I suspected this was swimbladder, though I have noticed when I do feel him, he has trouble even chewing the food- so he has hardly been recieving anything to begin with. As well, he has become very weak, inactive and constantly unresponsive to my hands- he will at times cease from this and become lively, but most times he is very eccentric from the norm.

I was curious if anyone had had a gold fish with similar symptoms, that of floating at the top, trouble chewing food, and balance, swimming troubles. I have yet to try to well recommended 'frozen pea' solution.

Thank you much for your help!

Okay, it's been a few years since I had a tropical aquarium (all I've had was bettas the past 3 or 4 years). So I wanted to get some guppies. I went to the store and got a obviously pregnant yellow tailed female, the first female the guy could catch (which turned out to be a male...but he didn't believe me when I told him how obviously it was a male!!), and a very beautiful red male...I figured it would be okay for now since when the fry come I will do my best to keep most or all of them alive, and keep some females to even out my numbers. Also I got a little baby sucker fish to help out my tank later on down the road. (for now he's eating the live plants I got for him) But back to my real problem: ever since I brought these guys home, the sucker fish has been normal (eating like crazy!). But the three guppies are huddled together at the top of the water in the corner. At first I wrote it off as "they are just scared, and not used to so much room to run around in! But hours later same!

I accidently lost one of my guppies down the drain whilst cleaning the tank! I'm so upset. I quickly opened up the S bend in the drain under the sink but he/she was gone! The other 3 are extremely "stressed" almost like they are swimming round looking for the other one. I cannot believe it.
Should i buy a replacement? I am waiting on delivery of 22L tank. Should i wait? :(
