sounds like something attacked your poor fish, do you have any catfishes, plecos or algae eaters in the tank?
keep tank water extremely clean, add 1 tbsp aquarium salt to each 5 gal of water to help the fish heal

Sounds like a bad injury. Test your water and make sure it is cycled well so there are no toxins built up. Keep the fish seperate from any others. And add melafix and aquarium salt to help with healing.
Do you have an algae eater or something with this fish that caused the injury?

If you can, take a picture of it, and bring that picture to the pet store where you bought the fish. They might have some kind of medicine drops you can put in the water once they see what's going on.
