Birds - January 2007

[Selected]: All categories Pets Birds

I have a particular budgie that seems to have a huge mass in it's stomach. At first I thought it was constipation, but it became obvious that I was wrong. It seems to be oval, so I'm guessing it's most probably an egg that has been stuck in there! Anyway, the bird seems fine, doesn't show fatigue and it acting perfectly normal... The onnly thing I se out of lpace (other than the egg ofcource) is that her eyelids are a bit too bright red.

I know the obvious answer is to take it to the vet, but I wanted to get some advice first, and see if anyone else had experienced this before. Thanks...

On the drive home I noticed he was pulling his feathers out with his beak &realized that the spot on the head was actually a bald spot. I drove to the vets office. While the doctor did not work with small birds, she did tell me that there is a good possibility that the bird is suffering from stress. My sister also mentioned the possibility of mites(?). Could this be? How would I treat them? & if the problem is stress will his feathers grow back once he gets settled down?

I think my coketiels have finally been able to produce an egg that was able to hatch. I am unsure cause they won't let me see, which is fine (protective instincts and all). I just want to make sure that there is nothing extra special I need to do to make sure this baby (if there is one) is able to grow up.

We own two parakeets and the breeder we bought them from told us that the cere on the beak would change color (like to pink or brown, or whatever) and that would tell us if the parakeets were male or female. The breeder told us the cere would change color by the time the parakeets were 1 years old. However, the parakeets are now 3 years old and there is no visible cere. It is not brown or any color. One parakeet's beak is just plain black, and the other is a pale orange color. What's going on with the cere????

Of course the chick is wet still but on its belly it has a cord attached to a small dryed up looking sack. Do chicks have umbilical cords like dogs? if not what does this mean?

My cockatiel pair layed eggs and the eggs hatched so, the babies are 5 weeks and 2 days old. The babies are out of the nestbox and they are now sleeping on the perches and sometimes the cage floor too. They are also beginning to eat on their own. Anyways, I still kept the nestbox and the female and male go in there from time to time. Why are they going in and out and when will they lay their next clutch?
