Eclectus's rock. They're my second favorite bird species for several reasons. First, they are independent, and don't get all territorial about their people. They are one of a small handful of species that don't necessarily bond for life to one significant other.

They are quiet, for the most part, but I'll tell you their alarm call can rival any one of my Macaws for top noise decibal.

They're hillarious. Simon, a friend's Solly Eclecuts is hands down the funniest bird I've ever met. He knows a lot of tricks, he's sweet, he's funny, and when he doesn't try to be a human, he's trying to be my Macaw, Rio. He copies all of his sounds, puffs himself up and actually tries to explain to his mommy that he's not an eclectus at all, but a great big Macaw. He makes macaw noises, he struts around like Rio does, and he bobs his head like Rio does. He is freakin' hillarious. You put him and Rio together, he'll actually try to intimidate Rio (who's oh..I dunno 6 birds bigger than him) to back down. Then he'll make his macaw noises and strut around.

Eclectus's are easy to teach tricks. Especially the males. They are very smart, and very quick to catch on. Some of the coolest tricks I've taught, I've taught to eclectus's.

As far as feeding goes, food in the morning, food at night, with the occaisional treat thrown in throughout the day. That's how we do it at least. I called Kelly, Simon's mom just to make sure I'm right, and she said she feeds pellet in the morning, pellet at night and then she gives him whatever she's eating throughout the day. His favorite treat is Almonds still in the shell because it's fun to work out the puzzle of getting it out. Though, if he's being stubborn, she'll give him a brazil nut which takes absolutely forever for him to get out.

Eventually, I too will have an eclectus. But, for now, I'm working on my Macaws. I want to have one of every species of the large macaws before I go into the smaller species. I have a Military, a Greenwing, I think I'm getting a Blue and Gold this next weekend, and that'll be it for this year. Our birds go pretty much everywhere with us, so three outta do it for a while. LOL

For what it's worth, Simon goes everywhere with Kelly too. She manages a pet store, and he goes to work with her every day. He's quiet enough that she even takes him to the grocery store and places like that. He just hides inside the fold of her button down shirt (she wears that on top of her t-shirt or whatever so that he can go).

As far as size comparison? Solomon Island are a little smaller than the Vos Eclectus. They're just a little "chunkier" than an African Grey if you've seen those. They are quite a bit smaller than the Macaws, and quite a bit bigger than say a cockatiel or a budgie.

I hope that helps and if you need any specific help, email me and I'll be happy to help!

I have one! They aren't any different than any of the other parrots. I bathe mine with hot water out of a spray bottle....or he takes a bath in his dish. In my group of 52 parrots he is the quiet one. Mine eats seeds and fruits and veggies and Zupreem pellets and any thing else he can weasel out of anyone... But if you have further questions feel free to contact me and we can talk further....
