I butchered a chicken yesterday, and while plucking, I found it infested with lice. The chicken looked very healthy, was missing no feathers...and all around looked good. So it came as quite a shock. After more research, I see that they have probably had them awhile. The chickens have lost weight and stopped laying, but I thought that was due to the severe cold that we have had around here. So my question is, what is the best way to get rid of the lice? I need something that doesn't have a weaning off time for egg consumption but that is very effective. I also need to know if there are any diseases associated with fowl lice. I was going to apply for NPIP certification in 3-4 months, even though these birds will be gone and I will have 100 new birds (babies from other stocks) have these lice brought diseases on my property that will keep me from participating in the poultry improvement program? Also, is it quite common to have bird lice? Or is it all my fault!?

I bought two parakeets this weekend. One is mostly white, the other is mostly blue with streaks of black & white. I would believe they are still to young to tell their sex from what i have already read. I would like a few ideas for names that could fit for either sex. Also, I would deeply appreciate any information regarding websites that can educate me a little more on my new additions to my family.Thank you for all your answers.

Those birds have already laid 2 batches of eggs for the past 2 years. 4-5 Months ago, when the female laid her eggs, she attempted to kill the male 3 times, so then i have extracted the male from the cage. after 1- 2 Months the chicks are old enough and eating already by themselves so i removed the female breeder and reunited her to the male breeder's cage. Before I transfered the female, i have noticed that the male was rubbing his butt on the cage so i thought that he wants to mate so I reunited both of them. Then I observed them for a month and they were OK. After a few weeks, the female laid 5 eggs and I was very happy and they were still OK. But a few hours ago, they were fighting again, and I have noticed that the female was the aggressor and i have stopped them from fighting. After a few hours, I went to my friends house and came back. Then I have seen the male Severely injured on the head but still breathing. I removed him again and transfered him. but after 2 hours, he died :(

Thank you for reading this, I have woken up this morning and found that my female budgie, which is about 1 year old, has pulled ALOT of feathers out. She has a companian, a male budgie but I haven't bought a breeding box because I don't want anymore. She has lots of toys but she just likes sitting on a perch with the male budgie. She is eating regulary, and the only thing that has changed is that I have recently put a mirror in, oh, and we recently had a mouse. What is wrong with her? She looks awful. What do I do?

My cockatiels laid 4 eggs. The baby cockatiels are 5 weeks old now and they are out of the nestbox. The parents are now mating( they mated twice in 2days) and the male goes in the nestbox and so does the female. The male whistles from inside the nestbox. They still feed the babies and the babies are starting to eat by them selves but still the parents feed them. Are they going to lay another clutch soon? and will it be ok if she lays another clutch? (It's only her second clutch in a year) and when will they lay the clutch?

I have a 19 - soon to be 20 - year old Cockatiel and he seems to have diarrhea quite frequently. He still eats/drinks normally and is still very happy, active, and singing. I have taken fecal samples into the vet and they have not found anything wrong or of concern. I have had a difficult time finding anyone with a tiel of this age ... is this normal digestive upset for a tiel who is about to turn 20?

Both of my ears, right now, have bites on them. For some reason when ever my bird sees a phone and he is on my shoulder he just tkaes a chunk out of my ear. (not litterally but it is pretty hard) He usually brakes the skin. I don't get it. Is he trying to protect me? Has this ever happened to anyone else? Do you know why he is doing this?

I’ve noticed today that one of my teals ‘s nostrils looks quiet red & sore, he is aged 5 months, he hasn’t got any discharge from it, he is eating and singing as norm & I haven’t noticed him scratching at it?
Does he need to go to the vets? And does anyone know what could have caused this?

Thanks’

im thinking about getting a cockatiel and im doing some research. i came across a website that said dog and cat saliva will kill a bird within 24 hours. it said to never let a bird and a dog be in the same room together and to wash your hands after everytime you pet the dog or cat. i have a dog and i pet her all day and she likes to lick everything. does this mean i cant get a bird? i never read this in any of the cockatiel books i have.
