I’ve noticed today that one of my teals ‘s nostrils looks quiet red & sore, he is aged 5 months, he hasn’t got any discharge from it, he is eating and singing as norm & I haven’t noticed him scratching at it?
Does he need to go to the vets? And does anyone know what could have caused this?

Thanks’

As long as there is no discharge either from the nares or his eyes, and his poop looks normal, and he isn't acting strangely (sneezing, shivering, sulking,), he is more than likely OK.. He may have something irritating the area(New pin feathers), and been scratching it more than usual, irritating the area. Keep an eye on him, in case his condition worsens, but if it makes you feel better, I'd probably go ahead and take him to the vet---Birdman

Does it look swollen also? Was he flying around and possibly banged into something? Is he sneezing? Cockatiels, or any bird for that matter, are capable of catching colds and flus from humans. So it could be possible that if his nostrils are red, a little swollen and maybe sneezing a little he could have the start of a cold or possibly a respiratory infection which is quite common for them. You say there is no discharge so I would keep a close eye on him and as soon as you see some discharge or if you think it's not clearing up I would take him to an avian vet. I would also suggest monitoring his droppings to make sure all three components are present (urine=clear liquid, urates=solid white crystals and fecal components=dark solids). If he stops eating then he will not have a solid component to his droppings. It's good that you are watching his behaviour and mood for any changes as this is a very good indication if they are not feeling well. It may just clear up on its own in a couple of days, but if you are concerned I suggest seeing a veterinarian that specializes in birds. If your bird ends up having diarrhea, this is another thing to keep a close eye on as they can dehydrate fairly quickly, even within a few days if the problem isn't corrected.

Perhaps, he scraped it and it is now sore and red. Clean it with 1/2 hydrogen peroxide and 1/2 water. with a q-tip twice a day. I dilute the hydrogen peroxide because it can be drying used straight. Wait a week. It should improve. If he develops other symptoms, that is when I would take him to an avian vet. Locate one now so that in the future you won't make a wasted trip. Things should go well.

Could be one of several things--
One, he was scratching it, got a claw caught in it and it's inflamed.
Two, it itches and he's been rubbing it on bedding, perches, etc.
Three, he's growing new feathers in his facial area, and they're causing inflammation.
In any case, best thin you can do is daub it with a very little bit of peroxide, clean the cage thoroughly, and keep an eye on him.
