Wow. You just took on a WHOLE lot of work. I tell you what, I have 2 macaws myself, and one of them was an abused adult when I got him. I work with families, by volunteering my time to help with bird issues. It's imperative here that you get good information quickly and begin using it immediately. Where are you? I'm in Michigan, and if you're in state or at least close, I'll be happy to help you work with him. It sounds like you've got more than a few issues to iron out, and it's going to take a while.

My email is this screenname sdkramer76 at yahoo.com. If you'll email me, I'll give you my phone number and we can start by getting some of your questions answered. I know some great serious behaviorists, but in truth, it won't be the bird who needs the most work. It will be getting you educated to the point you can handle his issues and understand why he does the things he does.

I'll help any way I can, and if I don't know the answers, I have access to the people who do.

Hugs, Shannon

Time and being quiet and non-threatening around will help. Plus, talk to him, explain what happened, I think birds understand more than we think. I bet the feather dropping is just from being upset.
As for drinking, try offering bits of carrot and apple and broccoli-and anything else that has a high water content. You could also try drinking out of a glass or cup-either water or apple juice- and then offering it to him-birds love to drink after their people.
He's probably very upset and misses his last mommy...best of luck to you! What a wonderful opportunity-I love macaws!
Once he's comfortable with you, don't let him rule the roost! Establish that you're in control-NEVER let him get at a higher point than you. Establish the fact that you're the dominant bird in the household or he will be a holy terror!
Find a good bird forum online with other macaw owners and ask their opinion as well.

oh, i feel really bad
spend a ton of time with it
really take care of it
only feed it special vitamin pellets
(my bird is much nicer and healthier when he takes his pellets)
it will take him times to get use to them but once he does he will prob. Drink the water and as soon as he lays the egg he will probably feel a lot better
if you want some better answers you can join a yahoo group i am in and try to find the answer

I hope your pet gets better

Get a hold of sdkramer7 she sounds like she can help you. I too rescued a couple of birds, they adjusted faster then I thought they would. But your situation is different then mine. I hope everything works out for you.
