It's not absolutely necessary, but it's encouraged.
Why?
Because they won't think it's night without total darkness and silence. Birds judge the time of the day and what to do during it based on the sun, and the sun for birds in captivity is whatever lights you have on. When the sun sets, it's totally dark, but when people are walking in and out of rooms, it sends a bird's instincts all wonky because they've no idea what their bodies should do.
Because of this, it can decrease mating behaviour. Covering the cage for more than 12 hours signifies that it's winter, a bad mating season, therefore decreasing the mating behaviour because winter's a terrible mating and spawning season.
Also, some birds get terrible night frights. Covering the cage might lessen them. Sometimes this has an opposite effect, but I've never dealt with frights before.
And lastly, it's cooler at night. If you cover them, the warmth will stay within their cage and they can't get chilly.

it relies upon on the poultry and the room. If he's skittish or services to 'night frights' when you go away the room and change off the easy, then it could be maximum suitable to locate a dismal towel and probably go away a night easy (like the type you plug ideal into the opening or a hallway easy, and so on.) protecting is likewise sturdy if the room is drafty or has a tendency to be chilly. despite if, in the journey that your poultry shows no misery to being uncovered interior the ineffective of night, go away him be. protecting him might freak him out. I unquestionably have 2 bids, one must be coated or he gets scared, on a similar time as the different has a bare cage, and does basically advantageous. wish you come across an answer!

I do, the reason is there is a big picture window in the room where they sleep. At night my birds have been frightened of car headlights passing. When I cover them they do not see these lights and have a peaceful nights sleep

When I had birds they never wanted to calm down until they were covered. It keeps drafts from them and they like being covered. They didn't like it when I would sleep in on the weekends, though, they wanted the cover off!

If the room is Dark you don't need to but if you want to be up late and want the bird to go to sleep early or be quiet you can cover the cage. it's not a must.

I don't. People do to make them be quiet in the morning. Because when they see light it is time to wake up but the sun is up before u get up so they still think it is dark. My birds don't need it though. Some that are loud do.

this depends on the bird itself. some will have night terrors if you cover their cage and may require a night light(my budgies are a good example of this) and some may need to be covered to go to sleep as any little bit of light may keep them awake (my moms cockatiel).

i have a big cage and my dad built a house for my lovebirds (think of it as a 4 room nesting box). when my birds are tired, they just go in there to sleep. they also go in there if it gets cold. it's completely dark in there and they seem to sleep just fine without a cage cover (afternoon naps and sleeping at night)
