Maybe the answer its so simple its right infront of me. Does a new one grow in its place? If so, where does the new one come from? Like, is it grown in the body? I feel like the answer is right infront of me...

We have a white umbrella cockatoo and we recently tried to color him with avian-safe food coloring. One person coloring and one person holding him. He began to fidget and become aggresive making it close to impossible to color him. Any advice?

I have a desk lamp with a 20 watt bulb that gets to be about 90 degrees or more. Would this be ok to use on a pigeon egg?

Just for future referance.

4 my Guinea pigs to go through or hide in, but one like to chew or bite the plastic, but I'm worried if I left it in there, they might get ill from knawing on the plastic plant pot.

Or am I panicing too much?

I was going to buy a 3 yr old great sulpher crested too from a family. But, decided against it. I feel that it would be more wise to buy a baby and have a fresh start with it, as this other cockatoo would be going on it's 3rd home. I've done my research for over a month now and have already been to mytoos.com so plz I don't really need to be preached to about the ups and downs of too ownership. I have the time for one, noise isn't an issue, and a too would fit perfectly into my family. My problem? I have only been able to find 1 breeder that has babies available. I live in arkansas there are no breeders here. I've searched the united states and found only a handful of breeders and most do not expect any. I'm wanting a lesser or medium sulpher crested too. anyone know of a loving breeder that will ship?

A few years ago there was a big storm where I live and a nest was blown down and destroyed. Next thing, we find 3 fluffy little baby birds all huddled together trying to keep warm. We waited a while and there was no sign of the mother so we gently picked them up and wrapped them in a towel and then brought them inside and put them in an old hamser cage we had. We fed them milk with a syringe and put the cage beside the radiator. They were fine for a few days- we thought they would soon be strong enough to release, but then they died :(
So, what should you do if you find little abandoned baby birds?

P.S. no stupid answers like "eat them" and stuff- it's a serious question

I've talked to all the bird experts that I know and nothing I've learned thus far has helped with this "problem". It's not really a huge problem because I love him regardless, but...

Rio, my Military Macaw is 6 years old. He came from a HUGELY abusive background, and ended up coming home with me last year on February 13. We are very bonded, he loves me, I've got great hand control, he listens to me, and he talks. He knows well over 200 phrases that he uses AS LONG AS...

I'm not in the room with him. I want him to speak with me and to me. I've jumped in the room and praised the heck out of him for talking, I've came in and repeated what he's said and given him treats, I've always tried to catch him doing it and reinforcing it, but still he won't talk for me. He only seems to do it when he's bored, other than telling me Mmm! for when he likes food and requesting temperature changes in the water and telling me "Love you!"

Any ideas on how to help him talk in my presence?

On a question I posted about a policy requirement I'm working on regarding training people and requiring classes on care and behavior on large exotic birds before purchase, a woman stated that she didn't know that there was a problem with large exotics being abused. I know of SEVERAL cases where well meaning people purchased birds but never had the tools to learn about their species to take care of them.

My question to you is what's the worst abuse story you know about for the larger exotic species and do you think it's a problem?

(I do think it's a problem, hence the reason I'm working on ways to help with the problem.)

do birds only migrate or do some hibernate?

First off, my birds are Zebra Finches. I know it's not very common for someone to hand feed Zebra Finches, but I brought home my pair about a week ago, and my little brother was absolutely thrilled and he wanted to know if he could hold them. So I figure why not? The female laid her first egg either last night or this morning, so I figure, now is the time to figure out if hand feeding is a bad idea or not. First off, I won't be horribly disappointed if my attempts to make them trust humans is all for nothing. But my main question is this: If I hand feed them, does that mean it has to be ALL me, or do the parents still pitch in? I work full time at a pet store and go to school, so I can't take on the full job of raising them. Second question, how old should they be when I start hand feeding them? ..You know, I have a lot of questions. Maybe if someone could just tell me what to do, how to do it, how often, etc, that would be great. Thanks.

I'm curious. Why do you think this way, what brought you to this line of thinking?

Are you involved at all with PETA? Do you have animals of your own? If you do, what kind are they and how do you differently keep your animals to live up to your (forgive me) Bleeding Heart Liberal sense of direction?

I ask because I keep seeing answers to all these questions about how keeping an exotic bird is sin and evil and cruel...I just want to know VALID reasons why you think so. Once we've got those answers, we can take a few of those and give our sides of the story...

I heard the fumes expelled by Teflon non-stick pans can kill small birds since birds are highly sensitive to air quality and they inhale twice and all of that....

But did this happen to you and your pet? Or is this told as precaution.

I wonder because I have a bird in an adjacent room to the kitchen where I use teflon pans all the time and my bird is fine.

I have a Frilled Canary couple who has been together for eight months now. And the female keeps laying eggs that never hatch although she incubates all the time. When I break the eggs on the 15th incubation day I find them not fertile at all. I tried changing the male Canary but still she lays eggs with no chicks!
What shall I do?

My husband recently surprised me with the news that he has bought me 2 canaries. Two males. He will bring them home with him either on the plane but if not we will get them in 2 weeks by car. Before they arrive, I've been looking up about the care and training that goes into having canaries. Can anyone help me with this or give me resources online to find the proper care and training of canaries? Thanks, I never owned a bird in my life.

I have two cockatiels that hang out on the top of their cage most of the day. They like to hang their bums off the side and poop ends up on the floor...EWW! Well, I spend a lot of time cleaning it up. I was wondering if the cage that has the little sides the come out around the bottom would really be helpful. Does anyone else have this problem?
