he fell to the snow, he started to move his head, then it dropped to the snow for a min. he tryed to lift it again, only to have an icicle form on it. It's -25º C here, so I went out & scouped him up & placed him in a cardboard box & brought him in the house, He dosn't apear to have any broken wings & I'm hoping he'll start moving around, then let him go outside again. What else can I do?

You've done just about as much as you can, make sure the box is in a warm spot and keep your fingers crossed. If you live close to a Wildlife Rescue site give them a call, they should be able to help you with this.

Keep him nice and calm in the box for about an hour, then try opening the box outside, if he flies out and goes away all is well, if he stays in the box, falls, can't hold his head right, he needs to go to a wildlife rehabber asap, as he needs to be looked at. If you don't know of any rehabbers in your area, ask your vet/ local humane society if they know if any are around. In the mean time avoid peeking inside the box, it's stressful for the bird and can sometimes aggravate the situation.

Feed him some sugar water. That way there is no chance of hypoglycemia.Use a syringe or a clean medicine dropper. Warm this bird up He should warm up in your house. You can wait until he is fully alert and feed him beef or chicken baby food with a spoon. It's messy but effective. After 2 days, let him go. Have a tweet year

Hi there!
You may want to call the local vets and ask if the poor woodpecker is ok, if he/she is in the clear id let him go, if he/she isn't I would let the vets handle she/he.
Hope this helps!

crazycar gave the right advice...he may just be stunned and needs to rest before releasing. If actually injured, get him to a rehab.
