I heard the fumes expelled by Teflon non-stick pans can kill small birds since birds are highly sensitive to air quality and they inhale twice and all of that....

But did this happen to you and your pet? Or is this told as precaution.

I wonder because I have a bird in an adjacent room to the kitchen where I use teflon pans all the time and my bird is fine.

It's when non-stick cookware is overheated that it can and will kill birds, and not only small parrots but any size will be harmed. That said, it's just not worth the risk and many parrot owners I know use stainless steel simply because of their parrots.

It's not a precaution, it's the real deal - you've been lucky to not overheat anything yet. Take note that non-stick fumes are also harmful to humans.

A very parrot-savvy person posted this link for her community a while back. Losing a parrot because of something so simple and convenient for people is just heartbreaking.

Actually, I was just working with a girl yesterday who had exactly that happen. Her bird was in the kitchen with her while she was cooking and she started to burn something in a teflon pan, and he fell over right on the spot. It was heartbreaking.

It didn't happen yesterday, it happened a while back, but we were just talking about it yesterday.

The precaution comes from truth, and experience. How do you think we have learned that avacado kills birds? Several birds died after eating it. It was studied, then decided that avacado is toxic to birds. Same thing with teflon fumes.

YES Ihad about 20 parakeets, all 2nd & 3rd generation and about 10 finches. One night as I was getting ready to go to bed,I found them ALL dead. Then I remembered that earlier that evening I had put uo a teflon-coated pot with water on the stove and the water boiled out.A few weeks later ,I saw a report that showed that teflon pots may be hazardous to humans, because a study showed that birds die from teflon fumes. This was about 10 years ago.

Hi there. When I realized that Teflon scratches and some of it can end up on my food, I traded up to cast iron. That way I get iron micro-filings which is good for all. Have a tweet day and do what is comfortable for you. Teflon at a high temperature can give off toxic fumes.Good ventilation I'm sure is good for all.

It's if you get Teflon pans overheated and smoking.
In that case the fumes will kill the bird ... not good for you either. :-p
