Generally about one inch. Its too small if his toes wrap around the perch and his nails touch/scratch himself. Don't just limit your bird to the standard round one they give you in the cages at the pet store. There are other natural branches of different size, shape and color and birds like to chew on them. Just don't pick up any old branch from your backyard because some can be harmful to the bird.

Get perches of different sizes for your bird also. Since a bird is on his feet all day and cannot sit down like we can they need perches of various sizes. Sitting on different perches exercises their feet and the variety keeps them from getting sore and stiff.

Stay away from the sandpaper perches that claim to naturally clip the bird's nails. This can be irritating to the bird's feet.
