I have two cockatiels that hang out on the top of their cage most of the day. They like to hang their bums off the side and poop ends up on the floor...EWW! Well, I spend a lot of time cleaning it up. I was wondering if the cage that has the little sides the come out around the bottom would really be helpful. Does anyone else have this problem?

You're talking about the metal cage skirt, I think. And YES...it helps. It helps with that particular problem (Rio, our Military Macaw does it too, and his poop is as BIG as one of your Cockatiels! LOL) and that's the only thing that keeps it off the floor.

If you don't have the extra money to buy one of those cages, you can actually construct a skirt yourself out of fabric that will catch seed and all that poop. I don't know about your Fids, but mine have contests to see how far they can get the poop to go. It's maddening.

Check ebay's bird section for Birdcage skirts or a variation of those two words (Bird Cage skirts, Cage Skirts, Fabric cage skirts, Metal cage skirts etc) and you'll find some for pretty cheap.

Also, the cool thing about the fabric ones, you can dump them out, you can wring them out (to get any big hunks of poop off) and then you can throw them in the washing machine...talk about easy!

I actually find cage skirts like that another hassle as an additional thing to scrape/wash poop off of. I would put newspaper underneath of the cage so that the paper catches it all, and every once in a while, you can conveniently scrunch up the paper, throw it away, and lay a new sheet down. But hey, better on the floor than in their food and water. :P
