They're preening each other. My birds chew on each other's discarded feathers all the time. It's really quite healthy.

Once it's off, it's then a foot toy. The keratin shell on the shaft of the feather is fun to chew on and to manipulate with the beak. And, it satisfies the urge for preening. Almost like a cotton rope toy or something. Does that make sense?

If the bird is simply playing with the feathers, it is a form of entertainment. If the bird is truly ingesting the feather, it is a vitamin/mineral deficiency and they may benefit from a supplement in their diet.

There are two possible meanings.

1. they are preening one another

2. they are pulling feathers out to line a nest.
