Should I eat the protein X number of hours before the weight lifting or right after the lifting? What if I fast one day per week and lift weights on the day that I fast?

I have read that to lose weight eat upto five small meals a day (The right food I must add) Apparantly your metabolism speeds up and thus lose weight. True or not?

A co-worker asked me whether or not protein drinks count as meal substitutes. She is going to get a bypass surgery operation, and her doctor advised her to substitute two meals with a certain type of protein drink ... she tells me that she feels very hungry afterwards, and that a sugar-free jello thing would tie her over longer than those drinks.

I told her that protein drinks are primarily used for a boost of energy and to gain muscle mass (sometimes it's just mass :P). I drink protein drinks before working out for that purpose.

I couldn't tell her exactly why her doctor would tell her to sub two meals w/ protein drinks ... so I was wondering if y'all had any input. I assumed that her doctor was trying to get her used to small meals, since the size of her stomach is going to be drastically reduced, and that the drinks would provide nutrition she won't be able to get after the surgery.

I am on a low fat low calorie menu. I sometimes just need something crunchy and usually opt for pretzels. Will this hurt my diet? Can anyone think of something better to munch on. I already eat an apple for breakfast and have yogurt for lunch.

I know that the recommended rate of weight loss is 2 lbs. per week but I would like to lose it faster (like 4-7 lbs per week). But I'm afraid that I will have extra skin if I lose too fast. At 24 yrs. old, I've been told that your skin still has elasticity. How fast can I lose significant weight (I need to lose about 100 lbs) and not have any baggy unsightly extra skin?

When one has young children (under the age of three), one obviously ends up spending a good deal of time at home & it's difficult to get to the gym. However, most treadmills and exercise bikes have moving parts that are dangerous for small, curious toddlers. Is there home exercise equipment out there that is child-safe, or ways to better child-proof home exercise equipment you already have?

I had it 11 years ago and have kept my weight off. I had friends and knew of people who had it done and most of them gained theirs back. Why? I'm not trying to be high and mighty or anything. I just don't understand how anyone could go through that much risk, pain, ext and not keep it off. Any insight?
