I work in a professional office with men and women. There is a bit of socializing that takes place outside of the workplace. Recently, one of co-workers was honored with a baby shower. Every single co-worker with the exception of myself was invited. While I don't particularly like the person the shower was for (nor does she like me) and would not have attended if invited, I do feel as if an invite was in order. I think its rude to come to the office and talk about it in front of me. Thoughts? Whats the appropriate etiquette?

Especially if you're a little shy and are starting to open up more? How do you know when it's too much?

I have a fear of being rejected, ridiculed and ultimately abandoned by people, so I tend to stay rather quiet and shy around others. Even though I'm really quiet, people have said that I'm sweet and kind. But I want to overcome the shyness and am trying to by attempting to open up more to a few people.

So, are people just going to be glad I'm being more open or will they become detracted if I open up? In other words, how much is too much? And, how can you tell?

My work ethic is going down hill. I work at Walmart, and most of you know how Walmart is. People just don't care. Well, let me tell you, it's not just with customers, it's with employees too. I don't know how many times I had to TELL MY MANAGER when I worked again. I thought that was HIS job? He tried to get me to go back to deli when I was in personal, and I said hey look, you know I'm out at 3p.m. He just had t his look on his face and left.
My work ethic is going down hill there. It seems like everyone is only out for themselves, and doesn't really care about you, so I'm starting to get that way. I'm a hard worker, and I really don't like what I'm becoming. Should I suggest to my boss, or his boss ways to improve team effert in the store, or should I just leave it alone and look for another job? I plan on going to school soon, but honestly I need money to go to school, which is where Walmart comes in. I'm 27,

My sister just called me screaming about her mother in law...

her mother in law is going to be visiting in two weeks and called her today because..

she was cleaning out her closet and said that she wanted to bring her some presents...

turns out she has switched over to thongs and has a surplus of old underwear...

she wants to bring my sister her old underwear as a present...now my sister didn't know what to say because she was so shocked so she just said "Ok"

now she is freaking out about it!!

how does she get out of this one and let down her mother in law gently?

I would help her but I can't stop laughing

before you wash them, and dry them up and put them back in back in the cupboards.

Because its not nice when other people need to use the sink, only to face the mess someone else has left.

My co-worker next to me chews with his mouth open. I politely asked him to chew with his mouth closed twice to no avail. I then decided to slash his tires a few days later.

I work as a switchboard operator/receptionist and there are a lot of times when people call in and mispronounce the names of my co-workers when they ask to speak to them. I can understand this since sometimes it can be difficult to hear names correctly over a phone. Is it impolite to correct the people who call in if they mispronounce a name? For example, my boss's name is Mai (pronounced "May") and people will call in asking for "Meg", "Megan", "My", etc.

When you get word that last-minute guests are on their way to your home, you can probably think of a dozen or more things you need to do: fix your appearance, clean your home, prepare food and drinks. What do you think is the most important thing to do before visitors arrive to make them feel welcome?

I've heard it a number of times from White, Asian, and Hispanic friends that their parents have told them (or very obviously suggested) they can marry anyone as long he/she isn't Black. Is this a common sentiment? If it is, why is this the case? One of my good friends, who is Hispanic, has talked a few times about his parents not approving of him or his sister even considering dating a Black person. Any ideas?

I have been interviewed for a job and the boss seemed very pleased with me. However, the HR Manager told me that they were still interviewing the next week (meaning, last week). So it has been two weeks after my interview, you think I should go and call them to follow up their decision? I have sent an email but keep getting a "bounced reply".

I have a friend who has a child, but her and her son have two different last names.

Let's say that the mother's last name is Jones and the son's last name is Smith.

She just purchased a new home, and is wondering how to personalize items with a "family" last name.

She doesn't think the "Jones' Family" is appropriate, because that leaves out her son. She is wondering if "Jones-Smith Family" would be more appropriate.

I'm already spending more on this baby shower than I typically budget for wedding/baby gifts - even for family members. Not that I don't want to, it's just that I want to be fair. Am I expected to also get the mom-to-be a gift? Thanks!

Everything is already prepared and it's just a small wedding (16 people). I know all 3 people he wants to invite, but I want to keep it small, I don't know how to tell him that he can't bring the extra people!

I was born and raised in Maryland which is a borderline Southern state. Yet, people, even other natives of Maryland, keep asking me if I am from the midwest.

Why is that and should I be insulted?

My husband and I are in our mid-30's and have decided to remain childless. However, most of our friends and family have decided to have children, and we go broke twice a year because of it. We are expected to buy gifts for all their kids for Christmas and Birthdays, and this gets very expensive! (Not to mention the baby showers and other assorted holidays) Even on a tight budget at $20 per child, this still adds up to a lot when you consider my sister in law has 5 kids, and the close friends we each have, have at least 2 kids. I'm not even counting the kids that are in the future, or on the way!.

Can anyone offer positive advice or input? I did the math and figured we spend around $1,000+ per year on gifts for kids. This is absurd, and I am getting to a point where I resent it, and I don't want to feel that way. Parents just don't seem to 'get it' and I don't want to embarass ourselves by saying we can't afford it, because they wouldn't believe it and we would look like jerks.
