I have a friend who has a child, but her and her son have two different last names.

Let's say that the mother's last name is Jones and the son's last name is Smith.

She just purchased a new home, and is wondering how to personalize items with a "family" last name.

She doesn't think the "Jones' Family" is appropriate, because that leaves out her son. She is wondering if "Jones-Smith Family" would be more appropriate.

i would go with jones-smith, it is considerate and her child wouldn't feel like they don't matter

You can forget about the names altogether and identify family items with a single, unpronounceable 'glyph like Prince / TAFKAP did for a while. You can't get much more personal than than your own family glyph.

If that seems too radical then, yes, Jones-Smith is the best choice.

I think the combination of both names are appropriate but if the child has his own bathroom and the mom has her own then each can use each Initials to add to the towel sets.
A friend of mine had the same conundrum but she fixed it to put a Welcome mat and hand painted it herself with "Welcome to Chelle and Michael's home"
She uses first name only when she can and when using last names she combines them as you suggested.
Tell her congrats on the new home and may it make many wonderful memories.

Jones-Smith or Smith -Jones works and maybe make everyone one happy.

My brother being remarried has a "blended" family of yours mine and ours. They call themselves the "smith-jones" family for things like invitations etc. They use the kids name (from his wife's first husband) first then their last name. (I guess cuz it sounds better.) But that way they all feel like ONE family.

Ssince its her home, the name should be hers. But make sure things that are "his" have his name on them (maybe personal stationary with Billy Smith or something) so he knows she respects his decision to have a different name.

I kept my name.

We use "The myname-his name family" on our return address labels and how the church addresses us.

It works for us and gives my Dad a boost.
