My work ethic is going down hill. I work at Walmart, and most of you know how Walmart is. People just don't care. Well, let me tell you, it's not just with customers, it's with employees too. I don't know how many times I had to TELL MY MANAGER when I worked again. I thought that was HIS job? He tried to get me to go back to deli when I was in personal, and I said hey look, you know I'm out at 3p.m. He just had t his look on his face and left.
My work ethic is going down hill there. It seems like everyone is only out for themselves, and doesn't really care about you, so I'm starting to get that way. I'm a hard worker, and I really don't like what I'm becoming. Should I suggest to my boss, or his boss ways to improve team effert in the store, or should I just leave it alone and look for another job? I plan on going to school soon, but honestly I need money to go to school, which is where Walmart comes in. I'm 27,

I'm 27, but I made the mistake of joining the millitary instead of going to college. I got discharged because I started having anxeity attacks due to the stress in there. I've been finding it hard to pick myself back up from that failure, and improving my life. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean, if you were on break or in on your day off. Anyway your manager probably has a lot on his mind, he might not remember who is working when. They have an open door policy I would have a talk with your assistant manager and the manager and explain what you are having a problem with. Maybe they can help. If not maybe move to a different department with a different assistant manager that might understand you better.

It's pretty hard to change an attitude that can be corporate-wide, so I'm not sure that going to either your boss or HIS boss will do anything, but create antipathy towards you.

You really have to take stock of what benefits you get from working there and how much you're willing to put up with. Is the money you're making enough that you can put up and shut up? Is the job market in your area good enough that you can comfortably move on? Keep school in your mind. It's a worthwhile endeavour and will lead you to a btter future, no matter how long it takes.

In the meantime, *document* specific incidents where your manager wasn't fulfilling his duties. If anyone tries to say you haven't been doing YOUR job, or somehow download responsibility onto you, you have a very precise list of where the chain of command may have failed.

First off, those panic attacks worry me. What triggers those and have you had any since leaving the service? If so, see a doctor and get on some meds. Physical and mental well-being comes first, you know?

Secondly, is it possible for you to reduce your hours to part-time? Some companies will still provide medical and other benefits for people who work 30 hours or more...find out the minimum number of hours you need to work to maintain your benefits and see if you can reduce your hours.

Thirdly, find out if there are other departments in the store that have better management. If so, see if you can arrange a transfer there. If not...well, probably best to stay put where you are (better the Devil you know than the Devil you don't know).

Lastly, after reducing your hours (or at least rescheduling your time), see if you can enroll at a local junior college for evening classes. I would suggest classes that prepare you for college-level work in both English and mathematics. Don't try to overload yourself...just get back into the studying habit and re-familiarize yourself with academic subjects.

There's a common expression, "retail sucks"...and it's common because it's often true. You have survived being in the military and you're surviving retail work. After that, you should be able to weather most anything.

If you suggest ideas to your boss, one of several things could happen: (1) He'll steal your ideas, (2) He'll demand you put them into practice, possibly on your own time, or (3) He'll demean you for them.

I'd watch out for (1) if your ideas are really valuable. As far as (2) goes, you have to make the call on how much faith you have in your ideas and how much work you're willing to invest in them (remember, WalMart reaps the profit!). In terms of (3), that will impact you psychologically as well.

You're between a rock and a hard place. All you can do is try to gain more control over your time and weigh that against your financial needs. I wish you well; I feel for you.

It sounds like you either need a break or a new job. You don't want to become a person like the people you work with, and you are right, people at Walmart don't care. Take a breather. Go somewhere you can just relax for a day or two (something not too expensive, don't want you to to spend all your hard earned money) and think about your options. There are so many more jobs out there besides Walmart that you can find, and it sounds like you are a hard enough worker that I'm sure many employers would like.

I hope people don't do gross stuff at the deli, like in the whole rest of the store, shoppers will just put stuff they don't want anymore any old place. One day I saw an employee picking up some used flip-flops that someone apparently just LEFT in an aisle.
If your manager seems like a dork and isn't on top of everything, you'd do yourself a favor by just being really nice and helping him out. He may have enough problems of his own, and if you are helpful to him, you'll make yourself feel better, as well as him. Pay it forward! It feels better to do the right thing than to join the bandwagon and be pissy like everyone else. Choose your attitude!

I think you should look for another job. You have been
through alot and you don't need another stressful job.
Look for a job that would be less stressful for you.

Edit:
I am 28 and last Christmas season I worked at Toys R Us to
get some extra holiday money for presents for my kids. This was my first experience working in retail in my whole life.
I thought it would be fun especially since it was Christmas but I was very wrong. Even though I only worked in retail for four months I can see how stressful it is. My opinion is that retail is stressful and I never want to work in retail again!! So that is why I suggested you get another job. I would rather you never have an anxiety attack again than to get 10 points for this answer - but I do like the thumbs up. Thanks.

Try the health field. Lots of opportunity at a big facility. Lots of different positions not just stock work. Oh never mind my frist clause I did answer this.

I sympathize with you, it sounds horrible. I don't think saying anything constructive to management is going to help - they sound incompetent, probably overworked as well.

He/she will probably get offended (telling them how to do their job) and make it worse for you.

Is it possible to take some time and look for another job while still employed? Do some research on the internet, send your resume via internet, that sort of thing.

Apathy can be contagious and it shows. Thankfully, you are going back to school, and are already ahead of the rest of the walmart crowd.

Good luck.
