I have a new friend who doesn't smoke, but he was telling me how he wants to start ... we're both in our 20s, so it's really his decision. Anyway, I was just wondering what the etiquette would be if I was to smoke around him -- do I offer him a cigarette?

And yes, I know smoking is bad for you, but that isn't the question here.

I'm giving my two weeks notice tomorrow at my current job. What time of day should I sit down with by boss and tell her? I'm afraid that if I do it in the morning, then things will awkward and tense the rest of the day. However, if I do it at the end of the day, I don't want other employees to find out over the weekend.
What should I do?

Perhaps they 'conveniently' do not mention all the good that you do in the family and in life in general, but then they DO something(s) intentionally mean behind your back [rumors, exaggerations, or they say something cruel to you in hopes 4U to strike back verbally so they can 'tell all the relatives', twist it all around so that they come out smelling like a rose]?
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand maybe your parent doesn't have the guts to EVER take up for you one bit hardly?
HOW do you deal w/that cr*p?
[it's very difficult!]
what did you finally do for self-protection emotionally, spiritually, politically, socially?

Now, I understand that there is a time and place for everything. Its not polite to walk into an elemtary school class and start cussing, or run around Harlem screaming racial slurs, because a lot of people would be offended. So is there really a freedom of speech? And what about wearing offensive shirts? If someone is offended, they could just look away and not buy that shirt. I don't like to offend people but Im just wondering about this. Doesnt freedom of speech technically cover everything?

My coworker can't get insurance because he smokes and because years ago he had cancer in mouth. Now he has lung cancer, completely unrelated to his first bout with cancer, but related to his smoking. Despite the fact that he only has one lung he continues to smoke. Our management wants the employees to contribute time/money to a fundraiser to earn money for a surgery he needs on his remaining lung. I'm conflicted. I don't want to judge the guy, expecially because he has faced cancer twice, but it seems like a waste of time/money considering he won't stop smoking to save his own life. Is it horrible of me to not want to donate money (being a student working her way through college)? I'd still be willing to donate my time.

does the average american when on vacation any where in the world find when he or she is asked the question, are you american ? hesitate, in responding ? dont get me wrong out there folks, i am not knocking the old USA, meeting some AMERICANS socially, but having quite a few CANADIAN friends i tend to ask the question.... to what nationality am i speaking to.? i find the AMERICANS very reluctant to state within a second that THEY are AMERICAN... WHY? if it was an irishman , they wouldnt have to ask the question... no matter what IRELAND was accused of right or wrong, she would still be his country , his people, and his nation.

My friends are planning a trip for July. It's going to be a very inexpensive trip, b/c we are staying at my friend's family's condo on a private beach. We won't have to pay her for the stay, will get use of the beach and we will have a kitchen to prepare meals/store food. We plan on going out of dinner and for drinks about 3 of the 5 nights we will be there.

Right now, I'm very low on cash and don't have the money for the $250 roundtrip plane ticket. I don't have a credit card either. My friend offered to pay for the ticket along with hers on her credit card. I sort of feel bad though.

She's been my friend for 7 years and I've had her do this before for thinks like concert tickets, etc. I always pay her back. I just feel funny, b/c I don't have the money available right now. I will in a few weeks.

Should I let her charge my plane ticket to her credit card?

I was used to having the guys always pay for dinner, etc. This guy I am dating now - is really nice and I enjoy his company a lot - except that he thinks that going dutch is a good idea. But then again, if he asked me out to say, the movies and dinner, wouldn't that mean he has money to pay for it? What do you guys think? Is there a polite way to tell a guy when he asks you out - that you have no money for the date, and that he should shoulder the bill?

Basically I got a mixer from one of my friends - a good friend. When I opened the actual box to remove the mixer, there was a wedding card from someone else addressed to her -- As if she put the card inside the box to remember who gave her the gift.

Basically she regifted a gift.

Do I say anything? Or do I just let it go?

Could it be they just do not comprehend what they are reading, see what they want and jump to conclusions? I try to be clear when I ask a question so as to avoid rude answers or answers such as “you shouldn’t stereotype people”, especially when I state in my question “per the article that I read” these people all appeared to be of a certain ethnic group. Clearly that means I am asking the question based on an article I read, not my personal opinion. It seems that all people focus on today are words such as Mexican, black, Jewish, etc., jump to conclusions, get all bent out of shape and give rude answers. Not that some of the questions out there are not specifically asked just to annoy certain people and get them going. I try not to do that though.

Do I stop asking questions or just give up and hope I get a few intelligent answers to the questions I ask?

John F. Kennedy = Jack?
Edward M. Kennedy = Teddy?

OK, I know Jack is a nickname for John, although I can't fathom why. Usually nicknames are shorter like Dick for Richard or Bobby for Robert, or Bill for William. These make sense.

So why Jack for John or Teddy instead of Ed or Eddy.
