Could it be they just do not comprehend what they are reading, see what they want and jump to conclusions? I try to be clear when I ask a question so as to avoid rude answers or answers such as “you shouldn’t stereotype people”, especially when I state in my question “per the article that I read” these people all appeared to be of a certain ethnic group. Clearly that means I am asking the question based on an article I read, not my personal opinion. It seems that all people focus on today are words such as Mexican, black, Jewish, etc., jump to conclusions, get all bent out of shape and give rude answers. Not that some of the questions out there are not specifically asked just to annoy certain people and get them going. I try not to do that though.

Do I stop asking questions or just give up and hope I get a few intelligent answers to the questions I ask?

Many people just read what they want to read. I get the same with listening, How many different ways do I have to phrase a straight forward question to get a straight answer out of someone?

I'm with you, it drives me nuts. Just keep plugging away and try to ignore the illiterate.

Most people can't read today, or can only read at a 2nd-grade level.

There are certain questions that you're not allowed to ask or even think about. Among the forbidden questions are:

1. Is global warming as dire as the news tells us?
2. Are different races better at some things than other races?
3. Was the Holocost as large as some claim?

If you ask these questions or others you will be ostrasized and probably lose your job.

Whether you stop asking questions depends on how curious you are about the subject matter. Alternately, perhaps you could ask a close friend to listen to your question, then suggest ways that you could better phrase it? There might be a nicer way that doesn't make people jump on their PC ponies.

Of course, in my experience, people are so overly concerned with being perceived as opened minded that they'll slam anybody that dares to notice that we're not all made from the same cookie cutter. In that case, make a mental note of who these people are, and save yourself the frustration of trying to elicit intelligent responses.

I am with you. I think people spend to much time in front of the TV as children and not enough time reading...I have found this to be most true with men..as women seem to be better readers, but not in all cases...keep on asking your questions there are those out there that are well read and have a great vocabulary that may just answer your questions..all others just ignore

It's not that they can't read. It's that they have an opinion and want to share it, even if it really doesn't apply to the exact circumstances of the question.

I know on the questions I've asked, maybe only 20% of the answers I get actually pertain to what I asked.

Never give up asking questions, but you may have to tailor the question tighter to try and get the answer you want.

And there will always be people who glom onto one word and run with it.

To your last idea, "intelligent answers" on this site are few and far between

You have my complete sympathy. It is unfortunate, that a large number of people, appear not to be able to read, write, spell or count.
Please do not stop asking questions, there is a distinct shortage of interesting ones.

This (Yahoo Answers) is just a small "snapshot", of sorts, of the world. Meaning: there are lots and lots of idiots out there just waiting to get their kicks from saying or doing something stupid. Don't let it get you frustrated. There is still some intelligent life out here!

It's not about reading ability really, just rudeness. Some people will never make it past the Neanderthal level. I am not bothered because I don't have to look at their faces or hear their voices. Don't let it get to you.

Some people don't know how to read, because ther's television and more and more programs to watch so therefore some people don't read and just watched something that's already laid out for them,it's like having t.v. dinner. It's also infecting the attention span of people, especially children.
