before you wash them, and dry them up and put them back in back in the cupboards.

Because its not nice when other people need to use the sink, only to face the mess someone else has left.

I hate a messy kitchen - especially dirty dishes.

At my house, if you eat between meals you wash your dishes immediately and wipe off the counter.

We do the dishes and clean up the kitchen completely every evening right after we eat.

Health wise they should be cleaned after they are used. Etiquette wise they should be cleaned right after use. Manners wise they should be cleaned right after use.
NOW in real life we all know that dishes are left in the sink. Everyone does it. Singles are the most guilty of this, although I have known a few families that allow them to stack up. I can handle an overnight stay maybe as I have a dishwasher so it's effortless to rinse a plate and place it into the washer. Many who don't have them should wash them, but if they don't overnight would be the limit.

Dirty dishes should not sit in the sink for more than 24 hours and ONLY if there's important stuff you need to take care of which need priority over dishes.

If you're living with other people and y'all share the same "set" of dishes - they should be washed within an hour or two of their use.

Is this a housemate situation, or a workplace thing? In a situation where you are not partnered (or at the least good friends) and the mess should be cleaned up equally, then I would say the plates should be immediately washed and put back in their place. =)

Ideally, have a dishwasher you just put the dirty dishes in, and turn it on when it is full.

If you live with other people and no dishwasher, being considerate is the key, wash them as they are used.

If you live alone, let them pile up to the ceiling. No one else's business.

Only until they are all gathered from the meal. Then they should be washed and put away, or put in the dishwasher.

Anything else is rude and selfish on the part of the person who used the dishes.

you should clean the plates right after you have used them so later on the cleaning wont be a hassle..plus it is very nasty to leave dirty plates in the sink for over 3 days.

No more than seven days, or when you run out of clean ones. Just kidding!
You should do then right after your meal is over. That way you always have a nice clean sink and no smelly dishes that attract bugs....yuck!

I TRY to do them as I go, but usually I end up doing them after dinner or before I go to bed. Sometimes I do some of it while I'm cooking dinner so there won't be as much to do later.

But it depends on your schedule and who you have to help you. Perhaps your and your roommates (I'm guessing that's the situation) need to figure out a plan of who does them which days.

Personally, I wash them immediately when I am done using them or rinse and put in the dishwasher at least so the sink isn't cluttered and nasty.
