I've heard it a number of times from White, Asian, and Hispanic friends that their parents have told them (or very obviously suggested) they can marry anyone as long he/she isn't Black. Is this a common sentiment? If it is, why is this the case? One of my good friends, who is Hispanic, has talked a few times about his parents not approving of him or his sister even considering dating a Black person. Any ideas?

My mother has never cared abour race, only religion. A friend of mine has a mother who told her that she'd disown her if she ever dated a black man. A boyfriend of hers asked her mom "what if I was like, 1/8th black?" and her mother said "then you'd be out the door". I couldnt believe anyone was that narrow minded so I asked my mother how she'd feel if I brought home a black man. She said 'as long as he's a christian, I dont care"

So my mother doesnt care what race I date.....As long as they're christians:P

....My grandmother on the other hand.....

My thinking is that if a person feels an attraction for a member of another race and that attraction leads to marriage, so what? I will add that I have never heard anyone say, or imply, that one could marry another "so long as they weren't back." However, when I was in the eight grade and walked my girlfriend (a Mexican) home from school every day, I was eventually told by her dad that he didn't want any "white boys" around his daughter. Will some of us ever realize that all of us are just people and that race is never a legitimate excuse?

It seems that the world is changing and people don't get as upset now as in previous times, when a member of their family married a person of another colour. That's great. I treat all people the same and their colour doesn't come into play. There are many nice Whites and many nice Blacks and just as many wicked Whites and Blacks. It's a shame that there are still people who are prejudiced and teach their children that way too!

Prejudice. There is no better word to discribe it.
It happens in Brazil too, but I think people here are more open to that than in the US or in Europe.
I have worked with tourists for over 10 years (more than 10 years ago) and several got engaged to black brazilians, specially the germans.
And believe me, when the "tourists" get here they change... Even the most "traditional" ones change a lot during their stay in Rio de Janeiro. I've seen so many things...
Thank God nowadays I work with "Exports"!

hello
i'm a dark brown skin coloured and i would like to be a white coloured skin person. the reason, obvious white coloured person at first glance are more trusted by strangers, can get so many more advantages as at jobs with same qualification especially in the marketing field and no one can change that attitude. the answer, scientists should work to bring uniform colour to the world rather than telling a black coloured man of the silly advantage that they cannot get skin cancer if they start living under the sun than a white coloured man. who needs more protected skin if my world around is not to my advantage.
please take away the extra melanine in my body and i promise i'll live in a shade

yes it is......but i dont care about what other people think I have a bf who's black (i'm Hispanic) and i love him people just need to get over the difference between the races ...alot of our parents aren't over that whole situation because they were raised with a different sense of mentality...my mom didn't really approve of me dating him but once she got to know him and saw how sweet and respectful he was she told me it was alright... the thing is that too many people judge a person by there color and or race but i believe it wrong
HOPE THIS HELPS!!=D

That's just prejudice. I don't have a problem with it because I think rejecting a person based on skin color is totally moronic.

I hate statements that start with "I'm not prejudiced BUT . . ." and people who say it's OK until it comes to their own family and then they flip out. How hypocritical.

See "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" with Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, it's a really good movie about a couple having to face this hypocrisy in themselves when their daughter brings home her fiance and he is black.

A friend of mine (who's white) was told by her parents specifically that they would have a problem if she dated a black guy. She asked them, "what about other races", and they said they wouldn't have a problem with that.

Now I've gone on a family vacation with these people, stayed in their house, and other things I won't mention, and I never thought they would harbor those types of feelings.

I have heard of it but not in my family. Our family doesnt judge or even see color. I am white and one of my friends is black and she was having a make-up kinda party and someone asked me "what if it for black skin". I thought it was a funny so I told my friend and we laughed. I dont really know that she is black and I am white till someone points it out. I will never understand it but I have seen it alot.

I don't think that I would have a problem if my son or soon-to-arrive daughter loved someone outside of their race. Yet, If my child was treated poorly because he was black, then that would be a problem. Now my husband is a whole different story. I will give this a star.
