Is it polite to accept when your date offers to buy a drink for you, or is it politer to pay yourself? Either way I feel like I'm being rude!

My ex-wife unfortunately died recently and was buried wearing a really expensive ring that I bought for her. Would it be ok for me to dig her up and get the ring back? The thing is; if I don't do it I'm pretty sure that her second husband will, because he's a drunk and wants to sell it to buy beer.

My mother has told me it is not lady-like for a woman who smokes to smoke cigarettes with brown filters. They must be white filters. Has anyone else ever heard this?

(Please don't answer that smoking itself is not lady-like because that is not what I am asking).

My grandmother is in her seventies and for years she has been embarassing the family by not excusing herself when she is gassy. She seems to have no concern over where she is at the time~ in a grocery store, church, at the dinner table when everyone is eating, etc. It is always a gamble to take her anywhere, and an even bigger gamble to bring someone new home for a holiday thing. As if the farting weren't bad enough, she never says "excuse me" or anything, either.

This has got to be the strangest question on here, but my family and I are at a loss for something to do. When we have tried in the past, she whines about a sickness years ago that "triggered" this, like that makes it ok to be crude in public.

Any ideas?

How true do you think this statement is? Do you think that if you don't have anything nice to say you should keep your mouth shut, or do you believe everything and anything that is said should be taken as a valid point.

The other day I called someone Ma'am, and she proceded to tell me not to call her Ma'am ever again, because it is a word for the elderly and she isn't old.

I am student teaching in Greece (I'm from America), leaving Tuesday! I will be staying with a teacher at the school and paying her rent of 400 euros/month. I don't know her though; we have never met.
Do you think I'm supposed to bring my own bath towels? Or would she let me use hers? Is there a certain etiquette standard regarding bath towels?
Thanks!
:)

... you're sitting in the middle of a lecture, taking notes, and the person behind you chokes on their coffee, and proceeds to spray the 3 people infront of her as she coughs?

I was in shock, I got it in the back of the head and on my notes, some other guy got it in the arm... What the hell do you say to this person? Thanks, I like smelling like coffee and spital?

I attend a class that meets in an auditorium with seats like a movie theater. Everyone kind of has their own seat that they sit in. I sit on the end of a row and get their on time to get my seat. However, almost every day, this guy who sits past me on my row comes in...like 15 minutes late...and instead of saying "excuse me" or something like that he says nothing...barges over me. He is very rude, he doesn't even give me a second to move out of his way...I could stand up, move my backpack, etc but instead he just jumps all over me! The other day he even knocked my notebook off the desk! Still said nothing...It would be so much easier if he just waited a second and let me move and maybe said excuse me fairly often! Question is...what is the proper way to conduct yourself in this situation? Should one wait and say excuse me?

..that they are not okay, sad, depressed, etc, when you ask them, "How was your day?/How are you?" Or when they just announce it unexpectedly.

Folk have wondered why I never hit him, and were surprised when I took over three years to even swear at him. I was charged with breach of the peace as result, even though all our other neighbours agreed that he is a "f------ nutter" and that my advice to him to go and take his pills was quite humerous. I guess humour is the best way to cope with bad neighbour, but any additional advice welcome.

During the term my graduate student teacher and I were lightly flirting and we would share jokes about the subject and we were bonding on an educational level- and I sensed that we both knew not to really push the boundaries. I could tell he was single. He is very intelligent, and very imperfect- but I liked his imperfections. I felt I was on the same maturity level as him. I worked really hard in the class- and even though I wasnt the top student I got the most out of my office hours with him. He always cared about if I understood the material and would often come down to the same level as me. He often felt like my peer...When it was the last day of class, he made a gesture, timidly and bashfully to say a last good bye and I did as well. I really miss him already- and he was the first guy who I felt liked really cared and/or appreciated me- even off of just being a student. It still bothers me. Should I try to hunt him down? Or would that be innapropriate? We are both moving later on.

I've denied her at least 4 times...and she keeps asking to be my friend. Should i just get it over with and accept her as a "friend"....so she stops sending me these requests?

to see if anyone's in there - what do you say? "Someone's in here" sounds so lame. I usually end up mumbling something incoherent. Anyone have a better idea?

I recently had a chance to spend some time with my 85 year old grandma who is very religious. Well she has a lady living with her, around 40, who is basically putting crap in her head, such as subtle hints like "my son needs 120K to attend Berkley" and that she hears the lord talking to her through her dreams telling her to marry a 60 year old minister who recently became a widower. Ok this lady is a self proclaimed Prophet, who actually left her husband and children in the past because god told her to. Its pretty obvious that shes taking advantage, and I will soon leave my grandmas house, but I worry that this crazy will take advantage of her. How can I tell her to leave my grandma alone and move on in a nice way (or mean) that will not lead to her trying to tell my Grandma whats up. Sometimes I think my grandma believes her, but you know how sometimes old people can be gullible.

If I told you you looked tired? Is it wrong to tell someone they look tired? even if you just want to sympathize with them...?

Say, for example, someone you just know on the Internet, some email pal, helped you in some small way. Do you just say "thanks" or do you try to find something you can do to pay them back? Do you automatically send them a "thanks" card by email or do you recall that with their slow dial-up maybe those stupid e-cards are annoying to some folks? Does it depend on how well you know the person with you not feeling any sense of obligation if you don't really know them?

I live in a duplex and my new neighbors have been smoking pot. I don't have a problem with that, but it is making my house smell like pot. Also, I don't let people smoke in my apt. I make them go outside. I have 2 kids that I don't want it to be around. Can my kids get a contact high from pot smoke through the furnace? How do I ask them to smoke outside?
