My mother has told me it is not lady-like for a woman who smokes to smoke cigarettes with brown filters. They must be white filters. Has anyone else ever heard this?

(Please don't answer that smoking itself is not lady-like because that is not what I am asking).

I've heard that this goes hand-in-hand with the theory that women predominantly smoke menthol cigarettes which also happen to be white with white filters and a gold band. I think Dunhill are a brand that were aimed at women as well and they had white filters. It's purely for looks I believe. When you think about, the brands most affiliated with men all have the brown/yellow filters.

I have never heard that before, and my mom has smoked for more than 30 years.

I've noticed that women are more likely to smoke white-filtered cigarettes, but I have never heard that there is an actual etiquette to smoking other than the usual "don't blow smoke at people" type of stuff.

Hope this helps!

That's a new one for me. My wife smokes cigarettes with brown filters and I don't have a problem with it.

I have never heard this. I do not think filters of any sort make it OK. Or more lady like.

It's not a rule by anymeans, however it's kind of like girl babies are dressed in pink and boys in blue. Know what I mean?

In the fifties it was assumed that white cigs were for ladies and the others were for men.

OK I will tell you your mother is wrong. Smoking by anybody is wrong. Cigarettes are the single most evil thing ever manufactured and they will kill you. Forget about etiquette.

I've never heard that. I think it would be correct to say she's making it up.
