who call your workplace and ask to speak to "somebody"? Does it make you feel like a nobody?

Unless you know the answers to everything, then ask them how they need to be helped.

I don't think this is particularly rude at all, as most of us are passed through a half dozen people on most first time business calls before we even START to get an answer.

If you know the answer to everything, then simply say, "I believe I may be able to help you. What is it that you need, Sir".

Your attitude, I think is rotten. Maybe you are just having a bad day today? If not someone definitely needs to teach you some business and telephone etiquette.

No. I just ask them what they need and try and help them in the best possible way. That, or I ask them if there is anyone specific they would like to speak with, such as the superovisor, manager, owner...etc. Or if you want to be humorous say "I'm sorry, but nobody's here at the moment, may I please take a message." Although depending on what you do for a living and your clientel that last one could get you fired.

In customer service the rule is customer is always right so the best is Thankyou for calling, this is ..........( your name) how may I help you? or I will be more than happy to assist you. Just don't give a damm care about irate customers as they are venting not on you but on the company...

No, I tell them I am the person they want. (i.e. If they want the CEO, I'm the CEO)
