You should be friendly to your subordinates! Think of yourself as a limb on a body. Sure you might be the hand that puts food in the mouth, but nothing is going to happen if the shoulder, elbow and arm don't work with you. They make it happen and importantly, they make you look good or bad depending on your leadership.
This doesn't mean you have to be bosom buddies, in fact it is better you maintain a professional distance and don't fraternize outside of work-rlated activities, but there is no harm in a chat during coffee break or the occasion "that was a really good job on that presentation."
But nobody likes to be treated like a servant, and everyone does better knowing their efforts are appreciated.

Would you subordinates want to be friendly with you? Why can't they be co workers.

It depends on what you mean by friendly. You should be polite and treat them with respect. Being overly friendly and going out bar hopping with them can create problems. Some people will think you are their friend and expect special treatment.

The term "subordinates" says it all! Why not refer to them as your coworkers?

You must be polite in the first place.
Friendly, you must be very careful because people have the tendency to misjudge and do not see the limits.
It depends and on what do you mean with "friendly".
Sharing jokes with them? Sharing personal issues? Going for dinner with them? Going on weekends with them?

Friendly yes...respectful etc. Not buddies or pals though. That can ultimately get you into problems.
