to see if anyone's in there - what do you say? "Someone's in here" sounds so lame. I usually end up mumbling something incoherent. Anyone have a better idea?

I usually knock if I know it's a "single" and don't want to rattle a locked door. Besides, it might open by accident! If it's a "multi" and all the doors are closed, I look for shoes.

Knock back hehe.

Jk

Well if a person knocks on your cubicle door and it doesn't open, she'll obviously know that someone's inside.

So you don't have to reply or say anything.

Why would someone knock on a restroom door anyway? Weird...

I usually just say yes or yea. i dont think anything else is really needed.

to those who wonder why people would knock, many toilets dont have the little "occupied" thing on the door, so the only way to find out if someone is in there is to knock, try to open the door, or look underneath to see if you can see feet. i prefer people to knock!

This happens to me at work, I don't say anything, because obviously if the door is locked, then in all probability, the restroom is being used.

Using your best impression, say:
"Hello, I'm Mr. Ed"

I do it, people stop knocking and seem to walk away. You're right that it's odd to say "someone's in here", but what about the people who yank and pull and try over and over yanking and pulling on the door.

You could "surprise" them and leave it unlocked.

I agree that saying "someone is in here" is lame. But, what else are you going to say. Better then having someone walk in on you.

Just "yes" usually does the trick.

For me it's usually 'yo' or 'be right out'. If I'm a bit irritated it's 'yeah, yeah, hold your horses' or something.

"Do you need some T.P.?" is what I usually ask. Most often the answer is yes...what else do you knock for?
