Law & Ethics - August 2007

The majority of our emergency responce agencies do a good job but occasionally some bad apples in thies agencies commit acts that fuel the flames of distrust in the community (particularly the black community). Personally I have whitnessed a Washington D.C. cop getting (serviced) while in uniform in a police car by a prostitute. I was in the car next to him and he didnt notice me and my girlfriend ( we were quietly laughing the whole time!) Now several firestations are under investigation in the washington dc area for running a prostitution ring and it is a total embarrassment for our community. Have you whitnessed any police unethical conduct in your community?

Do we have privacy rights at a workplace? Let's say you get arrested and tell your manager about it. Do they have the right to tell all the other employees? Also, over time, the story has gotten so out of control and twisted, it doesn't even resemble the truth. Does the employee have any rights, as this is a huge stress factor when returning to work?

Can you hide from a subpoena in a custody battle? I'm writing a
script about this so I really need help on the subject matter.

So, can you hide/avoid being served? (i.e the Brittney spears situation where her manager was in hiding)

I’m looking to Sue Discover Card for a Big mistake they made. Ok this is what happened. I applied for a Discover Card and actually received it but the problem is that I found out that it was actually under my brother’s account. We both have the same first name and the last name. Discover said that I somehow screwed up when I entered the social security number. I know I entered the correct social security number, birth date etc. I want to sue Discover Card for lying to me and for making a mistake that affects my brother’s and my credit history. Any suggestion on how to find a lawyer that can handle a Big case like this?

Thanks for your suggestions.

I only ask because my butlers' father, Anthony SR., passed away yesterday.

He was a very nice man and Anthony wants to place him in the entry hall.

While the cost would be substantially more then cremation, I want to honor Anthony's wishes.

But is it legal?

Does anyone know the history behind the green-shaded lamps that attorneys in the USA all have on our desks? What is the history behind the trend?

Forget about gay or straight, republican or democrat, or any of that stuff for a second.

An arrest warrant states the law broken and the action taken by the arrestee that broke that law. Mr. Craig violated MN public lewdness laws. He "exhibitted conduct that is commonly associated with having annonomous sex."

Think about that!! He "EXCHANGED known, established signals to AGREE to have sex" with a supposed consenting adult and was arrested.

Guys think about that the next time you buy a girl a drink or ask her to dance in a bar. Ladies, what happens the next time you make eye contact with a guy accross the room in a bar or do your best sahay past a guy?

No I don't think they should have sex in a bathroom next to my kid taking a dump. But think of the concept of "slippery slope."

How about gay bars? Many politicians are against sex outside of marriage, well for us anyway. Will they stop here?

My brother and his wife were legally separated on 10/10/06 (it states that in their divorce paperwork) they filed a petition for divorce on 10/31/06... my brother, who's in the army, was shipped out to iraq before the divorce was finalized and he was killed in action. My question is... if they were legally separated a year ago, and were in a pending divorce, doesn't that disqualify her as an elligible spouse when it comes to recieving military benefits, or his death gratuity?

Recently, I applied for financing through a small car dealership in Houston, TX where I live. I submitted my basic information and I received a phone call from the Finance Manager asking me to come in because he had found a bank willing to finance me. I came in and after discussing everything with him I signed off on the loan application and everything. I left a down payment of 1050.00 in cash and put 500.00 from a credit card for a total of 1550.00. He explained that I MAY have to present canceled checks as proof of income to the financing bank because I had given him copies of handwritten company checks from my employment. I drove off with the car and was given the temporary cardboard plates indicating the car was untitled. I had the cars for a couple of days when the bank called and asked me for the canceled checks. For reasons I'd rather not state I was not able to provide such documentation. The deal pretty much fell dead at that point. The finance manager asked me to find someone else to put the car deal under. We tried obtaining a loan through my fiance but were denied and then we tried my soon to be mother-in-law. The deal was approved but suddenly my mother-in-law decided against signing off on the loan due to the high interest rate. So I pretty much told them that I would have to give back the car after having it for four days. The dealership owner explained that due to the time they invested in trying to get my deal done and the time I spent with the car will cause him to keep my entire down payment. I was shocked....that was a lot of money and it just went away like that. Is this legal or common practice? Please help!

of a lease I have with an apt. complex. Basically, I have had alot of trouble out of the complex. I live on the 2nd (top) story. My stairway coming to my apt. has gaping wholes in it, where there should be small boards, so children/pets won't fall thru. Also, my balcony is in really bad shape. When you go out on it, it shakes really bad, as if it's going to fall. The pools haven't been open all summer. Just alot of problems. Is there anyway, legally to get out of my lease? Thanks in advance :)
