I have a tropical tank with:
2x Mollys
2x Platys
2x silverfin tetras
2x phantom tetras
1 x gibbicep plec
1 x fantail goldfish (I know he shouldnt be in there, its not a heated tank, just the temperature the water naturally is is about 24 degrees)

I would really like a betta, the petshop told me its best not to as it would attack and kill anything with a big tail - my goldfish and plec. I was wondering if it was just the males that would do this or if it was both sexes, the pet shop didnt know.

Thanks.

I have nothing but guppies and cory cats. I have a 29 gallon , and two 55 gallons, one of which isn't set up yet. All except for the one 55 gallon I haven't set up are cycled. I'm trying to keep my males seperated from the females because 7 of my females are pregnant and are having babies like crazy. I have my existing fish spread out like so:
29: 6 males 2 cory cats
55 gallon: 13 females plus about 20+ of their newborns
I also have a cycled 10 gallon with 13 more babies in it..
I'm aware that guppies can drop about 3-5 times after breeding once. Which is why I'm asking. Not many of my females are cannibals..I can't seem to find a good store that will take the fry. How many can I have in my tanks if I set up the other 55 before they become majorly overcrowded? I want to avoid culling if I can..

Okay, i bought 4 mollies from the pet store a few moths ago, 1 male and 3 female.

shortly after bringing the fish home, about 3 days later they had fry. I seperated the fry into a breeder net which i then hung on the side of the tank. I fed them fry food whilst they were alive. The problem was, they kept dying. Then, after the fry died, the parents began to die aswell.

I had around 40 fry and none of them survived :(

What can i do to ensure that SOME of them live old enough to reproduce again?

I bought a betta last night from wal mart that had been beaten up by Oscars (long story). Anyway, I'm trying to rescue him. He has no fins. I have him in a 1 gallon bowl with aquarium salt added. My question is this. He's on his side alot. I know it has to do with the fact that he doesn't really have any fins but I think there is something else going on. He has a somewhat bloated belly and I have noticed that when he goes to the bottom of the bowl, he can't stay there. He floats right back up to the top. What would cause this and how would I fix it? Don't lecture me about keeping a betta in a bowl. I just want to get him well first before I invest in a bigger set up. If he lives, he'll get a nice tank with filtration and a heater. I promise.

Just out of curiosity, how old are guppies when you buy them at the pet store and how long do they usually live?

layed about 150 eggs.
this morning when i woke up both of them ate the eggs, i witnessed it. it wasnt any of the other fishes i have, which is only 2, and they are both window cleaners. I called a fish store and the fish store said not to worry about them because theyre harmless to the eggs. theyres only about 30 eggs left, but i want to be prepared for next time, when she lays the eggs. whats the process i can use to not let him or her eat the eggs, but let him fertilize the eggs ????

I have no idea why my tank decided to go hayward on me, but my ammonia has spiked to a dangerous level. It's not a new tank, and I don't have very many fish. I've changed the chemical filtration (it's ammo-carb) and done several water changes. I've also started to use AmmoLock and stopped feeding in the hopes it'll go down but to no avail.

Any suggestions on what I can do?

I dont have any chemicals in the water. Its all tap. The fish would have oxygen in the water due to the filter I have in there, it has like a water fall and like the bubbles under the water will [[ should ]] give them oxygen. Right? Yuo know I dont want to out them in the water and then they die, because they are really pretty fish! hey are only 3 fish that I want to put in there. Well, 3 different types of fish. Would it be safe to put them in there with the turtle? The turtle is a red- eared turtle. I need answers and FAST!

I have a 40 gallon tank with only 3 goldfish in it. One of them has fin rot I believe. The fins (top, sides, and tail) started to deteriorate several months ago and I have tried different medications. It is to the point where he now looks like "Finding Nemo" (one big fin, and one smaller fin"). I've tested the water levels (Ammonia, Nitrite, pH) and all the tests come out ideal.

His fins have a bit of a white outline on them where it is starting to deteriorate. I'm worried he won't have fins soon.

What can I do to stop this? He is about 5 years old. Thanks!

in my old tank i noticed that about half the time i watched my fish at night, my guppys and sometimes my blackneons, looked like they were PLAYING in the filter!
well, not IN the filter, but when the new water came out of the filter...thing, it created somewhat of a current. i realised that two of my guppys were swimming back and forth through and around the current, picking up alot of speed through it. but i dont think they were trying to go anywhere, because they turned around and stopped right before the wall came...
soon enough the other two were doing it too, and so were the two neons! the mollys never did that maybe because they were bigger and it didnt do anything to them, or because the mollys are older than my guppys and neons...

anyway, i got a new bigger one and within a week or so, they found a new current! only now, i have also added 3 blue neons and they played along too! soo, are they PLAYING, or just doing... something else?

Just asking because I'm thinking of getting one. What are some good fish, ornamental, and plant ideas? What equipment would you buy as well? Thanks to all that answer.

The water has turned a pinkish orange... but it doesnt look dirty. It's clear! Why is it like this and sould I clean out their tank? I really only clean it when it gets too much algea and it really doesnt have any algea because it's small, has a small filter, no light on it, and an algea eating snail (also orange if that matters)... but I know that the more you clean the tank the bigger they get, and I dont want them to get so big I need a new tank for them... but I also dont think it's healthy to be swimming around in pink water....

Oh and also, I dont think it's a reflection thing because I have the same exact tank only in orange on the other side of the book shelf holding a red-tailed shark and that's perfect!
The tank holding the goldfish is purple if that matters at all...

o_O
I've had fish for a looong time and so has my mom and neither of us know whats up! :D

ok i just got 3 neon tertras today, i read all about them and they have a 1 gal. tank with plants hidey holes and plenty of shady areas, and some tropical fish food, but my bubbler is really old and doesn't work very well, i have a really good bubbler with alot of outlets but its hooked up to my big 10 gal. tank downstairs with my huge goldfish that would eat the tertras in 1 bite, i would like to keep the tertras in my room but im just worried!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! should i risk them being in that small tank with little circulation, but ill be able to watch them before i go to bed, or should i put the tank downstairs and hook it up to the good bubbler and not watch them as much, like when their lights dim when it gets dark??? i think i already know the answer but what do you think?????

I got two yesturday cause i was told to get only two but they are really small and it seems like i could get more. I was thinking one or two more, is that too many??
In a nutshell... how many fish can you have in a ten gallon tank?

I have 2 Golden Gouramis, about 5 Cories, plus an Albino Cory and a Leopard Cory. A sucker catfish and a Angel Barb. The Cories knocked them off and the Barb ate them.
