in my old tank i noticed that about half the time i watched my fish at night, my guppys and sometimes my blackneons, looked like they were PLAYING in the filter!
well, not IN the filter, but when the new water came out of the filter...thing, it created somewhat of a current. i realised that two of my guppys were swimming back and forth through and around the current, picking up alot of speed through it. but i dont think they were trying to go anywhere, because they turned around and stopped right before the wall came...
soon enough the other two were doing it too, and so were the two neons! the mollys never did that maybe because they were bigger and it didnt do anything to them, or because the mollys are older than my guppys and neons...

anyway, i got a new bigger one and within a week or so, they found a new current! only now, i have also added 3 blue neons and they played along too! soo, are they PLAYING, or just doing... something else?

Fish get bored too. That is why it is important to have decorations in your tank. In the wild, they would have loads of other fish, plants, roots, rocks, currents and other things to play with, so when confined to a small tank, it is only natural that they would find something to do. My Danios do the same thing. Yes, they are playing, they will be more playful in groups, as are Yoyo Loaches (my favorite fish).

I think they are playing!! I see the same thing happening in my koi pond. I set up the pump outlet to spill in the water from about two feet , to help aeroate the water. The fish will ride the current and swim through the churning water for hours. It is really enjoyable to watch, and I can't think of doing something with that much energy that isn't enjoyable.
I think about it like us showering, the mix of the water and the air feels great.

Personally I don't think so. Play and entertainment are fairly advanced concepts build mostly on emotions. Fish don't have the phisical structures in their brains that produce and regulate such emotions.

I'm with the previous poster the said currents bring food... it also contains higher amount of oxygen usually. Those two things are the attraction to the flowing water.

most fish will be attracted to moving water because in the wild currents bring food.
