Just asking because I'm thinking of getting one. What are some good fish, ornamental, and plant ideas? What equipment would you buy as well? Thanks to all that answer.

First, I would take out the divider. Then, go to you fish store and look at the fish. Write down the names of fish that interest you, go home, and do some research to make sure those fish aren't going to get too big for your tank (or eat each other). In a 20 gallon, don't get anything that gets longer than 6 inches. Also, avoid Algae Eaters and Plecos because they get very big, aggressive, messy, and they will eat your plants. A good plant to start with is Elodea/Anacharis. It grows fairly tall and will not take over your tank. Dwarf Hairgrass makes a nice ground cover plant. Just remember that you shouldn't get plants that need fertilizer or CO2 injections. They are a pain. Stay with easy, quick growing, aquatic plants. You are going to need a heater, filter, gravel/sand, water dechlorinator, bucket, siphon (so you can clean the gravel), net, "Cycle", hiding spots (rock caves/flower pots/PVC pipes). Good starter fish are Tetras, Dwarf Gouramis, Barbs, Killifish, Danios, Platies, Guppies, and Swordtails. Good luck!

Well considering most dividers are removable, you can pretty much do anything you wish.

You can breed guppies. You can have a community tank. You can have an aggressive tank, or you can use the divider for half aggressive and half community fish. You would not be able to have many fish in a 20 gallon, so my suggestion is to go with a community tank of peaceful fish.

There are aggressive fish that do not get very large, but since they are terretorial, you would not be able to keep very many in such a small tank.

You could also make it a turtles/fish tank using a divider.(depending on which kind) and how short the divider is. You can make half of it "earth" and half of it water to allow the turtles land time as well as swim time. If the turtles are small enough you may even be able to put a few small fish in the water side.....

It's really up to you and how much time and money you wish to put into it.

Get two crowntail male Bettas. One for each side of the divider and some plants to make it look natural. You can watch them sparring and flaring at each other.

Just make sure they cannot reach each other.
