My fish keeps getting sick and I don't know what I am doing wrong. He had tail/fin rot and lost a lot of his tail and a little of his fin. It went away. A few days ago it started again. Then, it appeared to stop. Now, I looked at him a few minutes ago and it looks like it is again starting. I don't see him biting his tail. Any suggestions? I have a 3 gallon carbon filtered tank. I change his water every week about 25%. He has two tall silk plants and two small ones that cover the gravel. Also, there is a heater in there and a thermometer. When I clean the tank I notice white flakes coming off of the heater suction cups and the thermometer suction cup. No idea what that is. My co-worker said it is salt because I use aquarium salt in the tank. I had the since the first week in June and there is only one betta in there. When I clean I can't absolutely get every piece of waste I see, but I try to get most of it. Little particles are hard to get at when I clean they come up and float around

Can I make a floating garden from styrofoam for my fish pond ?. Can I spray paint it w/ black non- toxic paint? What kind of soil -- if any--can I put in the pot?

How many gallons does one need? I've read at petsmart that they only need 30 gallons and then I read on liveaquaria.com that they need a minimum of 70 gallons! Which one should I trust. I know the rule "1 gallon for every inch of fish", but that's just thrown out there all the time and its not a very good rule to use unless talking about small fish. You wouldn't put a 10 inch fish in a 10 gallon tank now would you?? Thanks to all that answer!

i bought tetra that were carrying a disease and gave it 2 my betta & now he has fin & body rot the odd thing is it happened in 1 day starting @ the base of his Dorsal fin & moving directly onto his body the scales around his dorsal fin r now gone ive been treating him with Maracyn 1 & 2, Jungle Fungus clear, stress coat & cloraphil so that way it would b easier 4 him 2 breath & less stressfull on his gills. his dorsal fin is almost completely gone except 4 the back part which is black now & the area around it seems a bit swollen. he also has a fungal infection, including a small patch on his mouth that seems 2 b going away. ive been treating him for 2 days now and hes taken 2 swimming again, but he hasnt eaten in 4 days and refuses 2. i dont want 2 loose him, but despite my efforts the area around his dorsal seems 2 b getting bigger, & rotting away more. what can i do? will he live? will his scales and dorsal fin grow back? how long will it b b4 he gets better? & how can i get him 2 ea

I've heard that most algae-eaters like coryfish or plecos are not good. What about snails?
I already clean my tank very well but would just like some help with the bottom of the tank.

I asked this question yesterday, but would prefer a fuller list.

Just need to know what would go well with a single male Betta and 7 European Ramshorn Snails in a 10 gallon tank.

Also need opinion here, Ramshorn or Apples?

First, he has no fins. They are starting to grow back now, just a little. I doubt they will ever look like they must have at some point. But, they are on the mend. My biggest problem right now seems to be swim bladder disease. I think. He has a little bit of a pot belly. When he tries to go to the bottom of the bowl, he immediately floats right back up to the top. While floating at the top, he can't keep himself upright. He goes over on his side and he curves his back end so that he almost looks like he's making a "C" shape. It could be from constipation, but it could also be from the trauma of the Oscar tank. I have withheld his food for the last day. But, he still doesn't seem better. I don't know if I can get him to eat a pea. I didn't see him eat anything when I tried to feed him on the first day. I've had him for three days now. Should I try an antibiotic? If so, what should I get? His fins are clear on the edges. Will the color come back eventually?

Ive had my Beta fish for about a year and for the last month or so he's been acting sick. He tries to eat, but for some reason cant seem to get the food into his mouth. it's wierd. He's lost all of his pretty blue color and his fins are not as big as they used to be. Ive had other betas beofre and this has never happened. At first, i thought he was starting to die, but with all my other betas they died in like a day. I just feel bad that he's suffering and want to help him if I can. Any suggestions?

I really want to purchase a piranha, but i've only had freshwater semi tropcal fish, and I'm a little lost. I basically have no idea where to start..
Should I buy one or a school?
Heating, filtration, etc..
What size tank (obviously, bigger than a 10 or 25 gal)
Feeding
cleaning (will it bite off my fingers if I clean the tank??)
Best types of piranhas ( I really want something scary looking)
Live or plastic plants
Decor
adding salt??

Any help would be awesome thanks!

I purchased my first Betta fish yesterday. My primary concern was what is the best type of water for my Betta fish. I thought I remembered that my daughter-in-law told me she uses distilled water. However, after researching the Internet it seems that tap water is the best for Betta fish as long as you use a declorinator or let the tap water sit out for 24 hours. Many people on the Internet state that even though they let their tap water sit for 24 hours, they still use a declorinator. Some people said all you have to do is let the tap water sit for 24 hours and the chlorine disappears. This is where I am confused. Can someone give me a definite answer to the question of whether or not you have to also use a declorinator in tap water when you let it sit for 24 hours or is letting the tap water sit for 24 hours enough on its own?

I Have another fish i cant decide on and it is the scrible rabbitfish and yellow tang.
I saw the rabbitfish at the pet shop and emidiatly fell im LOVE with them, i know their venomouse but DO THEY STING OTHER FISH DELIBERATLY and are they deadly to us?
do they sting tangs, clowns, angel fish or dotty backs and if they dont sting them do they get along?
also i know yellow tangs are realy nice but i think it might not get along with my blue tang cause the tank is only big enough for 1 tangs territory, what do you think

They may be just common comets, but I love them and want them to grow as large as possible, but I have had different sizes from the 'fish experts' at the store, so if you know how big these 'carp' will get, I'd like to know that, too. I need an answer by 11p.m. Sunday PDT.

Want Ralph to have 'companionship' ... what should I get him? I am thinking either another pleco (if it's close to Ralph in size) or an angel fish ... but would like 'suggestions' since this is a 'settled tank' and I am taking out two LARGE goldfish ... if that makes and difference. I need an answer by Sunday at 11 p.m. PST.
