In theory they can breed as small as 1", but I think that fairly rare. I would say 2" is far more common.

I have seen them breed at about 6 months of age and at about 2".

i have a tank full of them and they breed all the time.producing 50+ young at a time.not many survive though.build a dark shelter or put an upside down plant pot in the tank and they will start to breed.it is fancinating to watch them protecting their young,they pick them up in their mouths and spit them back into their hide out.they can breed from about 6 months on
