The best thing for you to do at this point is place him in a quite, dark place if you can move his tank. If not, cover the tank and turn off the light. The peace and quite will allow him to recover a bit. Tomorrow do a 25% water change and add about 1/2 teaspoon of salt. add the salt a little at the time over the course of a few hours. This will also help him recover by helping to protect him from diseases. From that point on, do regular water changes and feed him well on a variety of foods and watch closely for any indication of fungus. That would be white fluffy looking stuff. If you see that, treat with a good fungus medication such as Maroxy.

Your fish is probably fine. It will be stressed for a while. All Betta's have air coming out of their gills when they go to the top to breathe. Please place something over the top of the bowl such as a hair net to prevent this from happening again. Like magicman said place him in a quiet dark spot to let him calm down. And keep a eye out for any other signs of him acting ill or abnormal.

I had this same problem with a hatchet fish. It's still alive and thriving 3 months later.First off,get a top for your aquarium, because bettas are famous for jumping out.I had a male that was forever jumping up on the plastic plants above water. He would stay out of the water for up to 3 minutes, and then jump back in.I assumed it was to cool off, because I kept him in a community tank with a temp of 80 to keep ick in check. When I moved him to his own tank and kept the water temp at 72 he stopped jumping out of the water.

I agree with Magicman, but I have to let you know that I have not had good results curing fungus from bettas that jumped. Good luck though, and stay on top of your water changes. They really are that important. Also, get a cover for your tank, but make sure it is not air tight.

fish that jump out from water is a sign of bad water quality, so you may want to check on that. do a water test immediately (for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate - all should be zero).
try a 25% water change and put some aquarium salt and see if it helps.
also how big is your tank?
