long tail bettas due to people breeding. Their wild version is both short tail for both male and female. Its less common to find short tail male simply because "ugly" compared to years of breeding of the long tail.
Males
Size normally larger then females (body size to body size)
Depending on size of the tank will mostly be friend to other fish but not other of their own kind.
Fin and tail can be short and long in many shape IE veil, crown, halfmoon, double tail, etc
Females
Size smaller then males in most case
Tank size small to large and the females can be keep together but will fight at first till they have their order of who's who and whos on top.
fin and tail are almost always short because females never breed for their looks.
Has a dark strip running hort and when she is place with the male would turn vert if she is ready for breeding.
Males are the ones that take care of the nesting and the babies when they are a few days old.

bettas are nice, they have their own personallities so some are morea ggressive and others are less. So it isnt 100 % true that they are all aggressive to tankmates.
They dont require much care, feed like normal fish, once a day.
Bettas come in a wide range of colors. Most petstores will have reds, blue, mutlicolors. But bettas that i have range from melano blacks to clear. Wide range of colors, color patterns, and tail type.
They will eat baby fish, like most fish will.
Please do not fall into the trap that most inexperienced fishkeepers fall into.
-Males are not all long finned, and females are not all short finned.
-Short fin males(plakats) are the natural fin length,
-Some of my HM females have longer fins than some males.
The best way to tell is by looking under the fish, inbetween the two ventricles, there is a white dot (egg tube) on females.
When you become more advance, you can tell just by looking atthe head. Males have bolder heads, where the females are more smooth curves.
good luck

More than likely it is a male if it has long big fins and tail fin. Honestly I have never seen a female crown-tail Betta fish. Only regular female Betta's,but a female crown-tail probably would look like a regular female too with short fins.

Most but not all bettas with short fins are males. There is also a wild species called the Plakat where the male has short fins. It's not likely to find those at the pet store but it's also not unheard of. You'll know a female without a doubt when you see her egg spot (see my pic here)

Yes they might eat newly hatched fry, which is why you remove dad after they've hatched. Lots of work to breed them though, and lots of responsibility, as each fish needs individual housing when it grows up, so don't do this unless you're prepared, because the cost can really add up.
Siamese fighting fish, not Chinese.

Bettas are nicknamed "Chinese Fighting Fish", hence they are agressive. They come in an array of colors. Female Bettas have shorter fins and tails then do the males. You'll see the difference if you can see a male and female and compare them. They do not eat a lot. Usually a few granuals or flake per day. Usually people overfeed Bettas.

A betta male is a colorful fish with long fins. The female betta has less color. Usually, you can keep them in a small bowl, with no pump and very little care. Do not put more than one betta male in the bowl, because they will fight until death. They also are usually aggressive to other fish.

bettas are basically fighting fish, they are peacful alone buy will kill other fish and if 2 males are together they will fight to the death, if a male and female are together they will breed and the male will kill the female, male bettas are more colorful and have long flowing fins, females kind of look like guppys but without colorful tails. im not sure if they eat their babies though.

bettas are the fish that you see in the pet stores and in wal mart that are kept in little tiny bowls. They come in various colors. They are beautiful fish. The males are the ones with the long, flowing fins. Females are a little larger and have short fins. They can't be kept with others of their kind but they are relatively peaceful and can be kept with other fish that won't pick on them. They eat very little (compared to other fish) and make a wonderful pet. But, before buying one, please do some research. They should NOT be kept in the little tiny bowls that you see them in at the store.

The males are the beautiful ones!! They have long fins with gorgeous colors! The female betas are really ugly, and small with pretty short fins. They look similar, but are not as pretty.
Betas have to be kept alone in their own tanks. you cannot put two beta males together. you can put a beta male and female together - and they will reproduce. dont forget to take the male out before the female gets eggs!!! he'll eat them!
