Fish - July 2007

2 of my fish died...both scissor tails...in the same day...they would go belly up and then zip around like crazy they kept doing that until one of them died.....i didn't put the other one in the tank but in a small bowl and he then seemed fine so after about a hour or so i put him back it the tank and he was as usual...after 3 hour he died.....i don't know what happened to either of them...they seemed fine..until they died...what do they have?...or could it be contajous to my other fish?...What should I do?

Hi all,

I have a 55 gallon freshwater aquarium thats moderately planted. Problem is that I have great trouble keeping plants alive (the fish are doing great)--the leaves start turning brown no matter how much fertilizer or iron supplements i add. I have 2 aquaglow 15 watt lights turned on in a 12 hour light cyle. I suspect that's not enough light since i heard its supposed to be 2 watts per gallon, so i need over a 100 watts of light? Since my aquarium hood (from an Allglass 55 gallon aquarium kit) can only handle these smaller tube lights, do i need to get another hood in order to keep these plans? thanks very much.

I have no idea what it is and how to complete it. I'm doing it for a fish tank and it Petco Care Sheets and i have no idea what they are talking about. Sites that people recommended me didnt help. what are the stages in completing it? What do you need to buy for it? How long does it take with special equipment? How long will it take for a two gallon tank? What are the specific steps to do it and make sure it is complete and ready to add fish? What do you need to get to get the readings they say that should be read? do you take it into the pet store and they do a water test on it? will it take 6-7 weeks for a little two gallon tank? what do you need to buy to get rid of ammonia? please help!!!!!!!!!!

He is the coolest thing I ever saw! seems very hyper and mucho in love with the loach. I have never seen one before and wonder if i could find him a girlfriend. I have named him Dave.
He shares a tank with a mated pair of angels, a butterfly fish, & his loachy bum chum. he may not actually be a he, but how do I tell?
It is a 2 ft ish tank so loads of room for more fishies.
Suggestions on a postcard please?...

I have 6 tetras (4 neons and 2 black neons) and I've recently discovered they're probably not going to school together. As it stands my neons don't even school (they've been together for roughly 2 weeks). Is this because their group is too small, because my tank is too small (10 gallons) or because the temperature is set at 88 to kill an Ich infection?
How can I encourage schooling, given that the supplier of my fish wont accept the black neons back and I have nowhere else to put them. My neons and black neons also occasionally show aggressive behaviour, though never towards the guppies, I expect this is normal and they're establishing a pecking order, but is it? Also, i have 4 guppies in my tank so would adding 2 more neons be overstocking? I also have a small 5 gallon fry tank which I'm raising my fry in until they're big enough to either switch with my community tank or give away.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I ahev a 5 gallon aquarium. The problem is that it is staying cloudy. I treat it with formula but then it gets right back cloudy in a few days. I have 9 fish in the but i have 5 baby swordtails that are almost half grown. They were born in there, I also have one adult female swordtale one adult guppy and two black fish i dont now what they are but they are livearers too. do u think i could have to many fish in there. and if i do then what do u think i could do with them?

ok i got a female guppy and she died but before she died she layed eggs and so today i woke up and i saw 2 baby guppies and so i didnt have a net but i have 2 other fish that are bigger than the babies and so i took the bigger ones in a dif tank and 2night im going 2 by a net 2night but im wondering how long do i wait till i let them out of the net

i have 2 angelfish;1 kori cat;1 baby plecostamus; 2 mollies;5 cardinals; 1 horsefaced loach;1 clown loach.
neither of these fish grow to be to big.
the angelfish and the pleco will grow to be big.
i will have to replace the pleco in a couple of years.
i want to get some dwarf gouramis.
what other breeds of fish should i get to go in my tank?
i want color and the most aggressive they can be are semi aggressive.
p.s. my tank is not crowded at all.

I have a 55 gallon tank and have several variety of fish in it. I have had the same fish in it for almost a year. However the past few days one of my rainbow sharks has been "attacking" the other rainbow sharks , it has already killed one. I have attached a picture of another rainbow that he has been attacking, in the picture you can see all of his fins have been bit and tore and he has little bits taken out of his side. Does anyone know why my fish is doing this, he doesnt bother any of the other fish in the tank.

i dont know why, but lately ive been wanting to get a fish. not anything fancy or high dollar...just a simple little fish. we have a petco down here and i know they sell different kinds of fish...i just dont know anything about them really...i know there are some that come in that jar...angel fish or bettas?? i dont know....but i was just planning on getting a small, simple fish bowl..not any big tank or anything....so what would be the best thing for me to get?

In my tank i have two suckerloaches ( algae eaters) and they have got to bog for the tank- they also have a habbit of killing other fish - that is how powerful they are! Im trying to get rid of them but nobody wants them even the pet store, also they are immpossible to catch, what is the best way to get the 2 out? and also what should i do with them?

I'm leaving for vacation in 2 days, and today I'm going to clean the tank. I'm doing probably a 50% water change and changing the filter for the month. I have this stuff called Cycle that is supposed to put helpful bacteria into a tank. Should I use that also? The only other time I've used it is when I first set up my tank.
