As with all the others above however, first ensure theres no different colours running through it this is usually indicative of metals or minerals being present in the slate. Last thing you want is to have Lead or Iron leaching out in the tank.

as nosoop said, soaking it is a must. In addition to looking for colors leaching into the water also watch for any oily film that may form on the surface of the water. If you see that it's also not a good piece for a tank.

Make sure you boil it very thoughoghly. Also, you should soak it in water for a day to make sure any fake coloration (if it was intended for construction) seeps out in a bucket, not in your tank...

Make sure to boil it for a while and wash it off and see if the water looks weird and if it does it's not good for your tank.
