All fish require aquarium salt - No too much to where the water is then in turn brackish - Parrot fish are a semi-aggressive freshwater fish.

I'll throw even more confusion into the mix. There are two cichlids called parrot fish, and a group of related saltwater species.

If your fish is a cichlid (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=1599 ) they don't require salt. They may benefit from it in a low concentration (1 tablespoon per 5 gallons), especially if they are in a new tank, or are recoviering from an ailment. If it's a saltwater species (any of the ones seen in this link: http://www.tropicalfishoutlet.com/FishSubCategory.asp?FishCategoryID=30 ) they need more salt than just brackish - they need a salinity between 1.020-1.026 as measured with a hydrometer.

I always put in just enough for whatever amount of water I change. The directions on my label say 1 tablespoon for every 5 gallons of water, so if I change a 3-gallon bucket I just go ahead and drop in one tablespoon full. You don't have to be too exact with aquarium salt; it's not like a medication where you have to worry about overdosing. Hope that helps.

What sort of parrot fish do you have? The true south american cichlid, or the deformed fish that can't close its mouth?

Either way neither require salt.
