When you speak about "fresh water" you are talking about cichlids as well...
cichlids include Oscars, Jack Dempsey, and Red Devils. Even African Cichlids.
All very aggressive that can grow huge (in big enough tank) with razor blade teeth.
A big oscar would beable to swallow a chinese fighting fish.

A SIAMESE Fighting Fish isn't that strong at all. Oscars, Wolf Cichlids, and Piranhas are probably the top three strongest fish.

Are you serious? Bettas (Chinese Fighting Fish) are some of the weakest fish ever. They are little squishy wads of fins and scales. If you have ever watched a pike at feeding time? Keep in mind this fish is about 5 feet long eating something the size of a man's foot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AD2tZu9u5qE

SIAMESE fighting fish. they originated in Siam (currently Thailand).

strongest in what way? bettas are very timid in community tanks and often end up being picked on. they only fight their own kind and this is only for territory (or in male/female cases because the female does not wish to breed). if you're referring to hardy fish, yes, bettas can stand a lot of water conditions, temps, and even cycling tanks. this however does not mean hey thrive in them. bettas should be kept in at least 2.5 gallons of heated and filtered water.

you should be thinking of a few thing else being that the chinese language battling fish aka betta's are no longer salt water fish. you need to offer greater component relating to the fish (backside feeder) you're asking approximately.

Most definitely the Wolf Cichlid. It is the largest cichlid there is. Pirrhanas are only aggressive in schools, not alone. A wolf is dangerous just by himself. It would swallow your chinese fighting fish whole. Research Wolf Cichlid or Cichlasoma Dovii. They are cool.

It might be aggressive but not necessarily the strongest. A little piranha might give it a little fight.

yes, the betta, as they can live without a filter or airstone.
