The average life expectancy of a betta is supposed to be 2 years. What is the longest you have kept your betta, and what did you do ?

Just for the record, I have been keeping bettas for about 10 years now. Not as long as a lot of people, but I purchase them ill and restore their lives. I have had one alive for 6 years (not counting how old he was when I picked him up in the store, which is known for ill fish). He was the most traumatized, un-healthy fish I've purchased. When I picked him up he had been in a fight with another betta (which I also bought, but died about 2 years ago) and was white due to stress. He managed to get Ick, swimbladder, had depression & wouldn't eat. It took almost 2 years of nursing to get him to the healthy fish he is today! He is housed in a 1 gallon vase with no special equipment. I feed him 3-4 pellets daily, except sundays. I do partial water changes every week, and full every month.

I had Rover (Red Butterfly Vail-Tail from Walmart) for 2 1/2 yrs (he just passed)...on average, "Petstore betta" are very close to 1yr when you get them...any younger and they don't have the "full" tail...who'd buy them? I kept Rover in a 2.5g Brandy sniffer (unfiltered), I changed his water every 2 days (about 1g) or 1x a week with a 100% water change. I treated tap water with de-chlorinator /chloramine and added 1/2 tsp salt per gallon of water (made up gallon jugs and let them sit overnight for room temp). I fed him 3-4 Betta Gold pellets a day (1x a day).

Last but not least, I Loved him!

In this case, I don't think you even need to care about what anyone else does or thinks. You are a credit to fishkeeping and are an amazing person in that you have been able to keep a betta alive for such a long time, six years is very long for a betta!, and two, because you rescue them, and have nursed them through what it sounds like, every imaginable disease there is. God bless you! I wish there were more people like you in this world!

I've had mine for a year and it is showing no signs of slowing down. I think the average Betta lives longer than 2 years, I heard 4 was closer to average with proper care.

I think I had mine for like 4 years. I really didnt do any thing special. I had a molly last like 7 years, I had him for like 2 years and I went away to college and my mom stopped cleaning the tank and he just recently died at 7. We were beginning to wonder if that thing was ever gonna die.

I have kept literally thousands of bettas over the years ans with proper care they can be expected to live about 5 years, the majority of mine live about that long.

4 years......I fed him the pellet food, I gave him 3 pellets a day and I changed his water once a month with a filtered brita pitcher. it worked wonders for my fish.
