You should never use straight tap water as it has chlorine and trace metals as well as other treatments in there that can kill the fish. Always use filtered or bottled water.

Now, how big is your turtle? Is his mouth larger than that of the fish you wish to place in your tank?

The reason why I ask is because red eared snapping turtles are the most common pet turtle. They will not try to eat anything they cannot eat with one grasp and swallow. They are not known to mar or attack other fish as long as the fish are bigger than their mouth.

Another thing is the type of fish. If they have long fins, ie, like an angel fish, then it's a no because the turtles will try to eat the ends of the fin.

Last but not least, how large is the tank? Fish need space for proper oxygen levels.

no, i was told you could if you fed it often and if the fish were large. But my fish were bigger than my turtle and I fed them twice a day and he still bit my fishes fins off. What is a regular size tank in your mind? A RES needs at least 100 gal tank and a 200gal filter as an adult so I imagane your tank is too small, most people don't think that is regular. Try creigs list when you up grade. I got my 135 gal for only $175.

Tap water can have (and usually does have) chemicals in it. You'd need to treat the water to make it safe for the fish to breathe.

Also, be aware that turtles are perfectly willing to eat fish! If they're pretty, and especially if they're not very fast or have flowing fins for the turtles to latch onto, then the turtles will have them for lunch. I'd advise giving the fish their own tank so that you won't wake up to find that you've only got two kinds of fish in the tank, and then none.

Make sure that the kind of turtles you have do not eat fish. . .unless that's what you want!

Friends of mine in college had turtles and they would feed them the .10 goldfish.

What kind of fish? Some would be okay, but the turtle will just eat others for a snack.

The turtle will eat them. I give my red ear baby guppies and he loves them. If you like the fish I wouldn't test it!
